Methodology For Putting Together The Chart

Back in 1995 I sent out a survey asking Billboard Reporters, Hot Mixers, Record Pool Members, Radio
Programmers, Retailers and Industry Professionals to list their top 20 Favorite Dance Records of All Time. I
thought the list would make a great conversation piece and I was curious as to what would come out on
top. More than anything else I thought I could use it one day in order to document the tunes that kept us
sweating on dance floors well into the morning. I thought it would make a great book and I still think it
would or will. That list caused quite a stir at the Winter Music Conference that year. As some of you know I
am in the process of writing a book called Abracadabra which documents my journey as a Disc Jockeys at
the beginning of my career. I am almost done with it and so once again began to think about a book nailing
the stories behind the singles that rocked our world. Now that original survey is almost 15 years old and I
thought to myself, would that same singles be on the chart if I took that survey again. It led me to think
that there would be a better more methodical way of doing this. I then thought about utilizing other points
of reference. I took that old survey and combined it with Ed Rothschild’s Decade wrap ups called “The Top
Dance Songs Of the 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s.” I used his sources as well as mine as a way of nominating
singles for the new combined survey. I worked out a point system based on how extensive the list was and
then also used Joel Whitburn’s Hot Dance/ Disco and Top Pop Singles Reference Books and gave them a
similar point system. What you have above are the results!
Just to give you an understanding of how different the various sources were here is an example…
On the survey I did, the number one single was “Bizarre Love Triangle” by New Order on this chart it
clocked in at #90.
On Ed’s list of the 1970’s the number one single was “Shame” by Evelyn “Champagne” King on this chart it
clocks in at #7. His 80’s number one was “Into The Groove” by Madonna, here on this chart it is #40. The
90’s number one was “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)” by C&C Music Factory f/ Freedom
Williams, here it landed at #3.
The Billboard Club Chart #1 was “Bad Luck” by Harold Melvin & The Blue-Notes, here is came in at #172.
For those that are curious about this kind of stuff, here were the next singles on deck that just missed out.
From my survey next up was: “You Are The Music” by Roman Holiday (Almighty) 1995
From Ed’s 1970’s list it was: “Heart Be Still” by Carl Graves (A&M) 1976
From Ed’s 80’s list, next would’ve been: “This Is For The Lover In You” by Shalamar (Solar) 1980
From Ed’s 1990’s list, next up was: “The Breeze” by Two Without Hats (Mic Mac) 1990
From the Billboard Club Chart the one that just missed out was: “You Can Get By” by Chic (Atlantic) 1977

Now the last thing is obvious to me but may not be so much for you. Because the survey I did was
completed in 1995 it gives a great disadvantage to any singles that came out after 1995. Also Ed hasn’t
compiled his list for this decade yet adding an additional disadvantage for singles after 1999. I’m fine with
that as I think for us to truly know which songs will stand the test of time, some time must go by first.
However, it’s time to close that gap, so please feel free to email me a list of your Top 20 Dance Singles of
