GIRARD Sat. 5:30pm Sun. 10:00 am Sat. 2:00-2:45pm

ARMA 4:00pm 8:00 am 3:15-3:45pm

The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We are committed to strong leadership, responsive community service, and forming caring, welcoming, intimate relationships with our fellow brothers and sisters. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family. Notes from the Pastor: Where did the time go? Its now February and in two weeks time we will be in the season of Lent. This reminds us once more that we dont own the time and so we have to value it by giving priority to what we believe is most important. On this regard, I commend once more all our volunteers in all aspects of our parish life for giving value to all that we do and sticking to their commitments to their ministry. To help you plan ahead: February 13 is Ash Wednesday! Reminder again that it is a day of fasting and abstinence. These spiritual exercises help us in to ways: as a form of penance for our sins and the sins of other people, especially the sin of abortion, and also as a means for us to grow in holiness. Our Lord Jesus himself fasted in the desert before he started his mission. Our schedule for Ash Wednesday: 7AM mass in Girard, 8AM mass in Arma, 12Noon mass in Arma, 6:30 PM mass in Girard. All these masses have imposition of ashes. At 3:15 PM, our PSR kids will have their station of the cross in Church and followed by imposition of ashes. Everybody is welcome. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Lots of people are sick nowadays. Three of our chaperones for March For Life also got sick while they were there in DC. Let us pray for their quick recovery. It is timely as we celebrate this weekend the feast of Saint Blaise. As has been the tradition of the Church we use the two blessed candles laid across the throat of the person asking for the saints intercession. Through the centuries his miraculous intercession has been experienced by many. Also February 11 is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Since 1992, the Catholic Church has celebrated World Day of the Sick on Feb. 11. World Day of the Sick has three consistent themes. First, it reminds the faithful to pray intensely and sincerely for those who are sick. Second, the celebration invites Christians to reflect on and respond to human suffering. And third, this day recognizes and honors all persons who work in health care and serve as caregivers. This year 2013, the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, the 21st World Day of the Sick will be solemnly celebrated at the Marian Shrine of Alttting in Germany. In a message for the 2013 World Day of the Sick, Pope Benedict XVI calls on everyone to be a good Samaritan and concretely help those in need. Thanking those who care for the sick and elderly, the pope underlines the church's fundamental role in "lovingly and generously accepting every human being, especially those who are weak and sick." For the complete message of the Pope you can follow it online at http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/ benedict_xvi/messages/sick/documents /hf_benxvi_mes_20130102_world-day-of-the-sick-2013_en.html. May all who are sick among us not only those of the throat experience healing and strength through the prayer and intercession of Saint Blaise, all the Saints and of our Blessed Virgin Mother. +++++++++++++++++++++ Reminder again that I will be joining a Priest Retreat at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita, Monday (Feb. 4) to Friday (Feb.8). Consequently we have no mass Tuesday to Friday and No Adoration both in Girard and Arma. Please pray for all the priests who will be making this retreat. Thank you for your understanding! God bless you all! Fr. Roger

Attitudes Toward Death Each year, when February rolls around, I get sort of sad and melancholy. I know the reason, for both of my parents passed away early in the month-Secretary Dad on the 3rd and Mom on the 9th, but years apart. Dads was unexpected, while Moms was, but each hurt the same. If Ive learned one thing in life, Worship Committee: Parish Finance Council: Chair Karen Pryer Chair Fred Bogina its that it always changes, and it can change fast. Death is one of those E.M.Es Joann Black Members Bill Harman, changes that hits a family quickly, sometimes without warning. You cant Ushers/Greeters Bill Harman Judy Wingebach, understand its effect if it has never happened to you. I taught a class on Altar Society Judy Smerchek Linda Broyles Death and Dying at FSCC for several years and concluded that while peoLectors Marcel Normand ple appear to have gotten over a death and you see them functioning in a Music Jan Harman normal manner, the truth is that they NEVER FULLY recuperate from the loss of a primary relative like a spouse, child, or parent. Losing a family Spaghetti Feed Announcements member changes our perception of life and our place in it. Were caught up **The Planning Committee will meet on Wednesday, February 6 right away in a windstorm of activities that cannot be put off. People call, at 6pm in the Rectory. This will be our final meeting before the food starts arriving, flowers also, funeral plans to make, then the wake, the Spaghetti Feed on Sunday, March 10. funeral, the graveside service, and perhaps a funeral dinner. **The annual Spaghetti Feed will be held on March 10. We will In a day or two, relatives leave and the family feels the real emptiness left be passing out tickets, for the Spaghetti Feed and prize drawing by their loss. If theyre fortunate, friends and family may contact them off before and after Mass on February 9-10. Please return the tickets and on in the weeks ahead to check on how theyre doing. These connections and/or money by March 2-3. Place in the envelope in the collecbecome dear to the survivors, more than anyone knows. tion basket marked Spaghetti Feed or return to Karen Pryer, Having a strong faith can help when faced with death. It cant be denied, Debbie Amershek or Judy Smerchek. for we know it will come. Our faith in Jesus tells us that He defeated it. His victory was a triumph for all who believe in Him. I believe that death has a St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, Feb. 3 meaning. Life, however meaningful, gives way to the meaningfulness of St. Blaise lived in the 4th Century and, while still young, was death--after all, they both have God as their architect and are a part of human named Bishop of Antioch (Turkey) in Asia Minor. There was existence. We all search for that meaning. A local lady told me recently much persecution from Rome during his time and he lived in a cave near the city, often with animals. Some Roman soldiers dis- about the passing of her Dad last year; A year ago, he helped the second covered him there and arrested him. He was taken before the Ro- graders with their prayers for First Confession. I tell myself that God chose man courts and placed in prison. The story is told of how he saved him because He knew that Dad would be a big help in Heaven.. She could be right; theres a reason for everything. St. Thomas More said, We should a young boy near death, who had a fishbone that had pierced his throat. Fish was, in those days, the common food of the people. At look forward to Death with hope. Years ago, on an occasion of death, we Blaises intercession, the child was relieved of the bone and saved. received a note from Fr. John Reinkemeyer that was comforting:

While in prison, the soldiers tortured him in an effort to get him to renounce his Catholic faith, but it didnt happen. They stretched him on a rack, tore his flesh with an iron comb, but he wouldnt budge. Finally, in 316, they beheaded him. His feast day is this weekend, Sunday, the 3rd. Because it falls on Sunday, the holy day liturgy will probably take precedence. The Church offers us the blessing of the throat by holding two candles in the form of a St. Andrews Cross, while the priest prays: Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat, and from every other evil. I recall Fr. Thissens words on this: There is nothing superstitious about this blessing. It must be approached with faith. In this blessing, the KEY WORD is intercession, because thats what the saints do for us-they intercede for us with the Father. We forget the CENTRALITY of our throats, the center of life itself--air and food pass through here. Also speech is located here. And the last words are important also: and every other evil. When we say AMEN, were saying, Yes, I accept this blessing. The essential thing to remember here is not so much the fishbone, but the fact that were dependent on God for our lives--every day that we live.
