SWAZILAND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND GENDER JUSTICE SUMMIT AND AWARDS DATE: 23-25 VENUE: KOPANONG HOTEL, SOUTH AFRICA 365 DAYS OF LOCAL ACTION TO END VIOLENCE AND EMPOWER WOMEN
Upon noting how HIV and AIDS is affecting the youth we took it upon ourselves as a youth to do something in helping those affected.
It is an important issue in that those affected need all the support they can get thus motivating them such that they feel they are not alone on their road to better health and recovery.
As a caregiver I assist the sick by making sure they follow the right medication, eat a well balanced diet and find extra assistance where I cannot cope.
For so long as members of my community are affected by ailments and I still have the energy and resources to help.
WHO IS THE KEY TARGET? WHO IS INVOLVED? ARE WOMEN AND MEN EQUALLY INVOLVED?
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY
The key target is but not limited to the HIV positive youth of my area. The youth in partnership with red cross, SOS and nurses from the Mbabane government hospital who frequent our area to equip us with information on how to take care of those affected. As a collaborative society that we are, men and women alike are involved and their concerns are very much considered in that they are all for the betterment of our community.
CREATIVITY: ARE YOU USING ARTS, CULTURE, MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA TO POPULARISE THE ISSUES?
We popularise the issue by being slotted in community gatherings and meetings so as to sensitise and teach about the dangers of HIV/AIDS and the importance of healthy living. We have full support from our cultural groups such as ummiso and sibhaca that have in cooperated in their songs messages regarding the dangers of HIV/AIDS. Trough the help of red cross we even show visuals by means of projectors that show and teach, from how one may be infected to how one can live healthily when infected and how to take care of those affected.
Monitoring and evaluation is done regularly in that patience are visited on a daily basis, making it very easy to track progress and make amends where required.
The best gift one can ever have is that of life, so the best results we have achieved is helping and seeing people get back to health through our unconditional support. We have gained so much recognition respect and support from the community.
In line with Article 27 sub article 3c this project is hopeful to achieve the recognition of caregivers and being a male myself we are hopeful to promote the involvement of man.
Sustainability is inevitable. It goes without say that others can and are willing to replicate our good deeds from the support, recognition and appreciation we receive. Many societies have suffered in silence the cruel nature of stigmatization, thus our project will be replicated as people are encouraged and given hope by seeing our society eradicating stigma.
LESSONS LEARNED
PROJECTS: SUB CATEGORY
A very good lesson regarding the stigmatisation of HIV positive people has been learnt. We have leant with utmost glad that stigmatisation is possible to eradicate, as witnessed in our small community. We use this lesson to our advantage in that we are encouraging more youth to become caregivers as they are now not afraid to be associated with HIV positive people.
