Part 5

When two dice are tossed simultaneously, the actual mean and variance of the sun of all dots on the
turned-up faces can be determined by using the formulae below:

Mean = ∑ x P( x)

Variance = ∑ x 2 P ( x )−(mean)2

(a) Based on table 1, determine the actual mean, the variance and the standard deviation of the
sum of all dots on the turned-up faces by using the formulae.

x P( x=x ) x , P( x=x ) x 2 , P(x=x )

2 1/36 2(1/36) = 1/18 1/18(2) = 1/9
3 1/18 3(1/18) = 1/6 1/6(3) = 1/2
4 1/12 4(1/2) = 1/3 1/3(4) = 4/3
5 1/9 5(1/9) = 5/9 5/9(5) = 25/9
6 5/36 6(5/36) = 5/6 5/6(6) = 5
7 1/6 7(1/6) = 7/6 7/6(7) = 49/6
8 5/36 8(5/36) = 10/9 10/9(8) = 80/9
9 1/9 9(1/9) = 1 1(9) = 9
1 1/12 10(1/12) = 5/6 5/6(10) = 25/3
0
1 1/18 11(1/8) = 11/8 11/18(11) = 121/18
1
1 1/36 12(1/36) = 1/3 1/3(12) = 4
2
∑ x , P ( x=x )=7 329
∑ x 2 , P ( x=x )= 6

Therefore the actual mean: = ∑ x , P ( x=x)=7

Actual variance: = ∑ x 2 , P ( x=x )−(mean)2

329
= –(7)2
6

35
=
6

= 5.8333 (4 d.p.)
Actual standard deviation = √ vari ance
= √ 35/6
= 2.415 (2d.p)
