Lesson Title: Shape and space 2D shapes
Lesson Duration: 1 hour
Lesson Time and Date: 9:50am -10:50am
Lesson Aims
To reinforce the students understanding of shape and space, by focusing on 2D shapes and the important
aspects that are involved.

Childrens Prior Learning (what do the children already know/what have they covered?)

Teaching Skill Development (What do you want to develop as a teacher?)

- I would like to develop confidence in thinking and interacting with the students in such a way that they are
yielding favorable learning outcomes.
- Gain an understanding of how to fully engage the students in the activity and therefore gain their full
attention.

Teaching and Learning Preparation (resources etc)

Session Structure
Lesson Phase
Orientation /Introduction:
Materials:
- A3 piece of
paper
- Whiteboard
- Whiteboard
marker

Orientation

5 minutes

Focus: Students attention to the whiteboard.

Engage: What do you think we are doing today?

Access: Write 2D and two dimensional on the board.

Guided Discovery 10 mins

1. Ask what does it mean by these terms/words? What is a

dimension? Dimension: A measurement of length in one direction.

Lesson Planner

Shapes
- Three different
triangles
- Rectangle
- Triangle
- Circle
- Pentagon
- Hexagon
- Octagon
- Decagon
- Rhombus
- Nonagon
- Heptagon

Eg: 2D shapes only have 2 dimensions - width and height. So 2D

shapes can only be drawn on a piece of paper.
2. If we had a 3D shape this would be 3 dimensions width, height
and depth.
3. Demonstrate that each shape will have an edge and corners or
vertices. Give an example of a square and a triangle.
4. Brainstorm on whiteboard about 2D shapes. Include the different
types of shapes and how many corners, sides. Utilise the A3 piece
of paper.
5. Explain that there are also three different types of triangles.
-

These are equilateral triangle (all side are equal, like

a normal triangle)

Right angle triangle has a 90degree angle with one

side horizontal and the other side vertical, with one
longer side.

Scalene triangle all sides are different.

Second part of the

introduction

Exploration 10 mins
Activity: I have, who has?
- Each student will receive a I have, who has? Card.
- They will take it in turns to read each card in order to
find the correct next card.
- The only person that should be talking is one person
at time.
- Continue this game until everyone has finished.

Teaching strategy/Learning
Activities

Individualising 20 mins
Activity 1:
- Who am I?
- Explain the worksheet to the students and demonstrate on the whiteboard how you

What will support the

students to learn the
concepts you are trying to
teach and to reach the
learning outcomes? How
will you cater for a diversity
of learning needs?

Conclusion /Closure

would like them to set it out in their books.

Extended activity 2: for students

- Read a book quietly.

Reflection 5 minutes

How will you capture the

main ideas of the lesson?

Recap/revision etc.

Assessment Strategies
What are the assessment
strategies used throughout
this lesson? These should be
closely aligned to your
lesson aims. How you will
you record student learning
outcomes?

Lesson Planner

Share/Explain/Justify Reflect: Share and correct

answers.

Consolidate: Discuss any misconceptions.

Challenge/Extend:

Using Anecdotal Notes, look for:

Understands what a 2D shape is?

Can recognise certain 2D shapes and be able to

name them, how many edges and how many corners?
