Blythe Elementary School Grading Plan 2015-2016

Following CMSs Strategic Plan 2018, Blythe Elementary is embracing the shift to
mastery grading practices. It is the purpose of grades to provide information to
teachers and parents regarding mastery of standards being taught in the classroom.
We use grades not to be punitive or to reward children, but rather to provide
information to instructors and parents so they can help their children learn and master
content. Mastery-based grading says that by tracking a students performance by
objective, we can see where growth is still needed. Students can be provided
additional instruction and practice, giving them the opportunity to improve their
grade. The goal is not give grades that have not been earned, but to focus on
students learning and mastering of content so they can be successful as they move
through school and beyond.

Shall ensure that grades represent mastery of content

Shall record grades in PowerSchool within 10 school days of the assignments due date
Shall not use grades in a punitive manner
Shall assign the initial score earned for an assignment/assessment on which the
student made a concerted effort
Shall assign an initial score of zero (0) to an assignment/assessment on which a
student made no attempt or is missing
Will not create an undue burden with projects or homework. If technology access or
material resources are needed, please reach out to the teacher.
Will follow all accommodations/modifications on 504/IEP/ELL plans for students as
assigned. If a student with a 504/IEP/ELL plan is failing despite student effort, the
team will meet to review plan and supports which are in place for that student.
Will not provide extra credit by requiring attendance at events, parent signatures,
bringing in of canned goods, classroom materials, etc. These things do not reflect
mastery of standards.
Shall implement the following guidelines related to formal assessments:
Assessments should be standards-based and measure students level of mastery on
specific learning objectives,
Additional practice will be provided for students who do not achieve initial mastery
(79%),
