Course Analysis
Course Name: HIS 402, American History (1900-Present)
Course Length: 10 Weeks
Course Type: Blended / Hybrid (2 Face-to-Face Sessions)
Average Student:
Lower Level Undergraduate Student. Familiar with History (HIS 401 prerequisite); however, may be taken out of order. Secondary level to American
History with prior knowledge.
Content Analysis:
Students should be familiar with blackboard, open and viewing Tegrity

videos prior to taking this course.
Students should be able to create various multimedia products such as
creating a PowerPoint Presentation, Prezi Presentation, etc. and the use of
this knowledge will be used to develop a project in this course.
Students should be able to use basic computer software such as Internet
Browser, Microsoft Office word, Adobe Reader.
General Goals:
Learn about industrial revolution, WWI (2 weeks), The Great Depression,

WWII (2 weeks), Civil rights movement, Vietnam War, Space Exploration,
September 11, 2001.
Learn how to create a multimedia project by using PowerPoint
presentation or Prezi.
Identify key elements that are necessary in the second course of the
history sequence.
Develop a well written paper on learning how to prevent history from
repeating itself (part 1 of final)
Enhancing Learning:
This course will give hands on experience in learning about American History
from 1900-present. While, taking this course students will be actively
involved in discussion board weekly that will count as a presentation grade

and the discussion boards will enhance the learning of the students. The
students will use their technology skills to complete a presentation that they
will give to the class (group of 4) while taking this course. The students will
have a 2 part final that they will complete at the end of the course.
General Course Assessments

Multiple Choice mid-term/Final: These assessments will measure general
conceptual information found on the lower levels of Blooms Taxonomy. This
includes being able to state definitions, key concepts, and other foundational
information.
Discussion Boards: These are an example of a formative assessment and will
be completed once a week to monitor student learning and provide feedback.
Group Project: This assessment is to be completed in a group of 4 (groups may
vary according to students). This project will be completed through Prezi or
power point. This will measure how well the students work with others and
how well they know the material of this course.
Civil Rights Paper Assignment: Students will write a 3-5 page paper (APA
format) on the Civil Rights Movement. This paper must be 3-5 pages, double
spaced, three sources.
Weekly Quiz: Each week we will have a quiz to test how much the students
have learned about the lesson.
Essay (part 1 of final): This assessment is a summative assessment. It be a
well written essay that allows the teacher to get the students opinion on
American History, while learning what knowledge they have gained from this
course.
Feedback Surveys (3 total): These surveys have been placed throughout the
course to help the instructor gather feedback on areas that could use
improvement.

Read Chapter 1 and 2 in the textbook.
Take weekly Quiz. (9/5)
Module 2: WWI (Week 2)

Objectives:
Discussion Board: Students will post a discussion board the most

memorable event in WWI. They must then respond to two other
classmates discussion boards.
Watch Tegrity Video on WWI.
Post in DB for group project and figure out a leader and who will do
what parts of the project.
Read Chapter 3, 4, on WWI in textbook.
Take Weekly Quiz. (9/12)
Module 3: WWI (continued) (Week 3)

Objectives:
Discussion Board: No post this week.

Watch Tegrity Video WWI (part 2).
Read Chapter 5 in textbook.
Begin working on your assign parts on group project.
Module 4: Design - WWII (Week 4)

Objectives:
Discussion Board: Students will post about the most memorable event
in WWII and then respond to two other classmates.
Watch Tegrity Video on WWII.
Read Chapter 6 & 7 in textbook.
Continue working on group project.
Take weekly quiz. (9/26)
Module 5: WWII (continued) (Week 5)
Objectives:
Discussion Board: No Post this week.

Watch Tegrity video WWII (part 2).
Send group work to group leader and post in group DB.
Compile project together and get ready to present next week.

Module 6: MID-TERM (Week 6)

Objectives:
Students will meet in the classroom building. (10/7)

Students will complete the Mid-term (50 MC questions) (1 hour time
limit).
Students will present their projects to the class.
Module 7: Civil Rights Movement (Week 7)

Objectives:
Discussion Board: Students will write their opinion on the civil rights
movement and respond to two other classmates.
Watch Tegrity Video (Civil Rights Movement)
Write Civil Rights Movement Paper.
No weekly Quiz.
Module 8: Development Vietnam War (Week 8)

Objectives:
Discussion Board: Students will write a paragraph about the Vietnam

War and respond to two other classmates.
Watch Tegrity Video (Vietnam War).
Read Chapter 10 &11 in textbook.
Take weekly Quiz.(10/17)
Start preparing for final exam.
Module 9: Development Space Exploration (Week 9)

Objectives:
Discussion Board: Students will write about Space Exploration and

respond to two other classmates.

Continue to prepare for Final (2 parts).
Module 10: September 11, 2001 (Week 10)
