Internet Safety

Integrating the Internet


Students
This lesson was designed for a middle school technology class learning about
digital citizenship.
Overview:
Students will be able to learn about Internet safety through research and creating
Internet safety posters and interactive crossword puzzles
Objective: Students will:
- Research various sources on Internet safety
- Identify keywords/terms about Internet safety
- Examine and explain ways to be safe online
- Create/ demonstrate their understanding by designing embedded posters
to share with younger students.
- Create interactive crossword puzzles about Internet safety and challenge
fellow students to test their knowledge.
Timeline
Six 45-minute technology class periods

Activity 1: Internet Safety Poster Project


Directions:
1. Using the following websites, research varies ways teens can stay safe on the
Internet. Read, watch videos, play games, and test your knowledge on
Internet safety.
a. Online Safety Kids Health
b. NSteens
c. Teen Internet Safety Tips - WedMD
d. CyberCafe
e. Brain Pop Online Internet Safety
f. Safe Web Surfing Video
2. Open up Microsoft Word and create a list of words and phrases to describe
what you learned about Internet safety.

a. Your list should go down left side of your document. One word or
phrase per a line. Your phrases should not be more than 4 words.
b. Each phrase should have a ~ between the word with no spaces. The ~
is located beside the number 1 on the keyboard and you must use the
shift key to get it to work.
i. Example: Internet~Safety
1. No~Personal~Information
c. If you want to make words or phrases larger than others you need to
repeat the word in your list more than one time. Writing
Internet~Safety five times will make that phrase much larger than all
the rest. See example below.

e. Internet~Safety
d. Save document on computer then highlight all the words and go up
top to edit and copy.
3. Open Firefox and go to Wordle to create your word cloud for your poster.
a. Choose Create

b. Paste your words and phrases into the text box and click go.

c. You can change your font, layout, and colors of your word cloud.
d. Once finished, take a screen shot of your word cloud by holding down
the command +shift + 4 keys together (Mac)
4. Using iMovie create at least five short video clips (30 60 seconds each)
explaining 5 Internet safety rules/tips.
5. Upload your videos to our classroom YouTube account.

6. Using the web tool Thinglink, augment the rules on your poster by
embedding the video clips you created into your rules for keeping kids safe
online.
7. Go to the Thinglink website and create a Student Account.

a. Click Create

b. Then Upload Image from Hard Drive. Choose you Word Cloud Image
to upload.

c. Give Project a Title

d. Click anywhere on your word cloud image to add your YouTube links
of your videos into the project. Add all five of your videos.

8. Lastly, share your finished Thinglink poster to our Edmodo group page.

Activity 1: Interactive Crossword Puzzle


1. Go to Read, Write, and Type Crossword Puzzle site.
2. Click on create your own puzzle. Choose grades 6 8 Name Title Internet
Safety and click Begin.

3. Next, type the Internet safety words you want to use for your crossword.

4. Then click create puzzle.

5. Add clues then click finish to create your puzzle.

6. Challenge one or two of your fellow students to try to solve your crossword
puzzle. Print copy out for teacher.
