You are advised to spend 60 minutes writing an essay on your chosen question in this booklet.
INSTRUCTIONS
Write an essay on at least ONE written text that you have studied.
The text(s) can be any of the following:
novel
non-fction
short story
poetry / song lyric
print media
drama
digital / online text
If you choose to write about more than one text, the texts may be:
the same type (eg, two poems), OR
a combination of different types (intertextual studies- eg a poem and a short story)
The texts may have the same or different authors. You may compare or contrast the texts
if you wish.
Choose ONE of questions 1-7. Make sure your chosen question suits the text(s), and that
you understand and can write about BOTH parts of the question before you start writing.
After you have chosen a question, complete the box at the top of page 3. You may use the
space on page 3 to map or plan your ideas.
QUESTIONS (Choose ONE):
1. Describe at least ONE important conict between two or more characters or individuals in the written
text(s).
Explain how the conict helped you to understand at least one character or individual OR events.
2. Describe at least ONE important quality that a main character or individual had in the written text(s).
Explain how the quality affected at least one other character or individual OR events throughout the
text(s).
3. Describe at least ONE important idea that is relevant to young people in the written text(s).
Explain why the idea, as shown in the text(s), is relevant to young people.
4. Describe at least ONE important setting in the written text(s).
Explain how the setting helped to explain at least one characters actions in the text.
Note: Setting is the time, place, and circumstances that form the background against which characters
or individuals live and act.
5. Describe at least ONE important lesson learned by a character or individual in the written text(s).
Explain why the lesson was important for the character or individual to learn.
6. Describe at least ONE important technique in the written text(s) that helped show the writers key
theme(s).
Explain how the technique showed the writers key theme(s) in the text(s).
Note: Techniques could include vocabulary, imagery, style, symbolism, structure, or narrative point-of-
view.
7. Describe at least ONE important incident which changed the events that happened later in the written
text(s).
Explain how the incident changed the events that happened later in the text(s).
