Perhaps one of the best known bird poems, Alfred, Lord Tennysons The Eagle.
First pblished in !"#! in the se$enth edition of Tennysons Poems, it be%ame a fa$orite and
is now fre&ently anthologi'ed. The alliteration and assonan%e tili'ed by Tennyson let the
lyri%al $erses roll off of ones tonge and the imagery of the poem is as simple as the rhyme
s%heme bt memorable. The first time ( got a good $iew of an eagles talons ( immediately
thoght of %rooked hands.)
The Eagle

,lose to the sn in lonely lands,
-ingd with the a're world, he stands.
The wrinkled sea beneath him %rawls+

And like a thnderbolt he falls.
