The process involves natural gas reforming to produce syngas which is then converted to ammonia. Key steps include primary reforming, secondary reforming and ammonia synthesis.

The natural gas feed is composed primarily of methane (92 mol%) with smaller amounts of ethane (2 mol%), propane (2 mol%), butane (1 mol%) and nitrogen (2 mol%) and carbon dioxide (1 mol%).

The primary reactions in the primary reformer are: CH4 + H2O = CO + 3H2 (75%), C2H6 + 2H2O = 2CO + 5H2 (100%), C3H8 + 3H2O = 3CO + 7H2 (100%), C4H10 + 4H2O = 4CO + 9H2 (100%), CO+H2O = CO2 + H2 (40%).
