Lesson Objectives: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): Students will define and compare many traditions and holidays celebrated by varying cultures. Students will do this by reading different nonfiction books and then expressing those ideas through a printmaking medium (Andy Warhol).
Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) (3-4) (http://dese.mo.gov/divimprove/curriculum/GLE/) Social Studies - GLEs: Relationships of Individuals and Groups to Institutions and Traditions: Ideas and beliefs of different cultures (6. K.) Literature - Common Core: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.2 Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.
Identify & define common vocabulary that connect the art form with the other identified content areas: Printmaking Culture Traditions Celebrations Holidays Relationships
Content Areas Integrated*: 1. Visual Art (Inspiration Artist: Andy Warhol - Printmaking) 2. Literacy 3. Social Studies
Lesson Activities & Procedure(s) (please be very specific): 1. After we discuss different holidays briefly (Anticipatory Set), students will choose a nonfiction book about a specific holiday they want to study. 2. Students will read the books they chose and find facts that they will track in their writers notebook. They must have at least 5 facts. 3. Students will be given a piece of paper and tools to make Styrofoam printmaking art. I will give them the instructions on how to create the printmaking with the Styrofoam and paint. They will then create a piece of
Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 2 art that has to do with the holiday or tradition they researched. 4. Once the artwork is complete, students will write the facts they found neatly on the back of their work. 5. Students will then present and teach the class the information they found about their holiday or tradition and tell them about their work of art. 6. While students are presenting, other students will take notes about the information given in their writers notebook. This information will be used for a later lesson about traditions. Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set): Class discussion about what the students learned about the different traditions and holidays. Talk about what holidays or traditions the students did not previously know about, how those relate to their lives in any way, and how it is important to be aware of the significance of those traditions/holidays. Summative Assessment strategy*: Students will write a short reflection on their Styrofoam art piece and why they created what they did to represent the tradition or holiday. Students must provide the facts that they found about the culture and tradition from the non-fiction books they researched in the reflection.
Anticipatory Set (Gaining Attention)*: Show pictures of adults and children in different cultures celebrating all different holidays and traditions, then talk about the many holidays and traditions that the students may celebrate with their families or in their culture.
Formative Assessment strategy: I will assess the information that the students give during their presentation to make sure that they did what they were supposed to and make sure that the information they found is helpful and appropriate for the other students and future assignments.
What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? Students must have the prior knowledge of knowing what holidays and traditions are. It may help if they know some of the different celebrations celebrated by different cultures, but not in detail. That is what the research and presentations are for. How will you engage students in imagining, exploring, and/or experimenting in this lesson? Students will explore any tradition or holiday that they are interested in and experiment with Styrofoam printmaking and different ideas of holiday/tradition expression. How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways? By being able to look at and research any holiday or tradition of different cultures they wanted to, this allows them to make their own thoughtful decisions, which is an important part of problem solving. Also, researching and learning about varying cultures allows students to look at things from all different perspectives. How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? We will continually talk about different norms and traditions that are present in other cultures that compare with the norms and lifestyles of things they do in their every day lives.
Art Integration Lesson Plan Template 3 How will you adapt the various aspects of the lesson to differently-abeled students? Students who are gifted will be able to use harder to read/upper level books to research their tradition. Challenged students will be given simpler books for their reading level to research their tradition. Non-English speaking students may research a holiday that they are more familiar with if they would like, but they still must use a book to find their facts. What opportunities/activities will students be given to revise and improve their understandings and their work? After the students present their work, we will dive deeper into the understand and knowledge about some of the holidays or traditions they researched, allowing them to check their research and learn more about that specific celebration. What opportunities/activities will you provide for students to share their learning in this lesson? The students get to share their work of art and teach the class about the tradition/holiday they researched.
