Introduction
The refresh for Samsung's top-of-the-line foldable phone was very much in line with what was being expected from the device. The company didn't make any groundbreaking new upgrades with this model, opting instead to focus on refinement.
This provided us with a well-rounded and polished Galaxy Z Fold 6, which builds on the strengths of its predecessor, while having enough merits of its own to justify its rather steep price tag, which also got an increase.
Design and display
Samsung made the overall design more square and flat which adds to the appeal of its most expensive foldable phone. The sharper, straighter lines work well with this form factor, with the Armor Aluminum frame locking it all in with commendable durability. The dual rail hinge mechanism has also been improved for enhanced durability.
The company has listened to its customers and equipped the Galaxy Z Fold 6 with a wider cover screen that now has a 22.1:9 aspect ratio. The size itself remains the same as before at 6.3-inch, while the internal 7.6-inch foldable panel now has a much less noticeable crease. The internal foldable panel now boasts peak brightness of 2,600 nits.
Specifications
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset from Qualcomm. It's paired with 12GB of RAM as standard with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of internal storage. There's no microSD card slot for external expansion. Samsung does point out that the device has a 1.6x larger vapor chamber that should ensure consistent high performance.
The camera setup gets improvements as well. It features a 50-megapixel primary sensor with Dual Pixel AF and OIS that's paired with a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 10-megapixel telephoto sensor with 3x optical zoom, and a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the cover display. There's a 4-megapixel Under Display Camera in the foldable panel.
Other specifications include a 4,400mAh battery, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, 25W wired charging support, and S Pen support.
Software and features
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 ships with Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1 out of the box. There are some new Galaxy AI features that it introduces, such as Sketch to Image that uses generative AI to turn your drawings and doodles into beautiful works of digital art. With Portrait Studio, you can convert portrait images into animated, 3D, or cartoonish versions.
The Galaxy Z Fold 6 also gets a dual-screen interpreter mode for translations, Live Translate for third-party apps, and Google's Gemini app. Samsung has made the Galaxy Z Fold 6 eligible to receive seven Android OS upgrades.
Availability and price
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 6 at its Unpacked event in Paris on July 10th with a July 24 release date with prices starting at $1,899.
