Introduction
Samsung didn't skip an iteration like it did with the Galaxy S23 FE's predecessor and came out with a new model the very next year, understandably called the Galaxy S24 FE. This is now the third Fan Edition smartphone in the Galaxy S lineup, and it doesn't break from tradition in any major way.
It can't be considered a true flagship phone, rather, it blends together some of the features from Samsung's high-end phones into an affordable package that also offers impressive software support.
Design
The Galaxy S24 FE takes its design inspiration from the pricier Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ models, boasting similar rounded corners, flat sides and glass panel. It does have larger bezels, though, on the top, left, and right. Available color options include Blue, Graphite, Gray, Mint and Yellow colors.
This is a noticeably bigger phone than its predecessors. The overall footprint is actually closer to that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Samsung has equipped it with a larger display but also added subtle contours to where the back glass fuses with the frame for a more comfortable fit in the hand. The device measures 77.3 X 162.0 X 8.0mm and weighs 213g.
Specifications
The Galaxy S24 FE is expected to feature the Exynos 2400 chipset in most markets, even the US. Samsung is making the display slightly larger by shifting from a 6.4 inch panel to a 6.7-inch panel. The new display will be brighter, too, with a maximum brightness of 1900 nits, up from the 1450 nits peak brightness on the S23 FE.
Samsung has opted to use the Exynos 2400e chip globally for the Galaxy S24 FE, it features this chip in the United States as well. The Exynos 2400e is an underclocked iteration of the Exynos 2400 that Samsung used for some variants of the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. The primary difference between the two is the 100MHz lower clock speed of the prime CPU core in the Exynos 2400e.
This means that as far as the performance is concerned, the Galaxy S24 FE is only slightly below par when compared to the flagship Galaxy S24 models from the same year, which is a considerable improvement since Samsung previously used year-old chipsets for its FE phones. The device comes with 8GB of RAM as standard that's paired with 128/256/512GB storage options.
Samsung has upgraded the battery, bumping it up to 4,700mAh, the biggest yet on an FE model. It supports 25W fast wired charging, 15W Qi wireless charging, and 4.5W Wireless PowerShare. A bigger screen has also been provided. The Galaxy S24 FE features a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with Full HD+ resolution, 120Hz variable refresh rate, and a peak brightness of up to 1,900nits. Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ has been used to protect the display panel.
The triple-camera setup remains the same, with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor alongside an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom. A 10-megapixel front camera is present as well.
Software and Features
The Galaxy S24 FE ships with Android 14-based One UI 6.1.1 out of the box and Samsung has promised seven major Android OS upgrades for the device, which will also receive security patches for seven years.
Samsung has provided some Galaxy AI features with the handset as well, including Instant Slow-Mo, Portrait Studio, and Generative Edit. Subsequent software updates will likely add to this assortment of AI features.
Availability and Price
Pricing for the Galaxy S24 FE starts at $649 in the United States for the 8GB and 128GB configuration. The device went on sale October 3, 2024.
