Zoe Saldaña Says She Would Return for ‘Crossroads’ Sequel if Britney Spears Did Too
Zoe Saldaña confirmed she is open to making a sequel to Crossroads — but only if the rest of the cast returns. Speaking to Variety, Saldaña said she would potentially reprise her role as Kit in the 2002 road-trip drama if was alongside co-star Britney Spears.
“Why not?” Saldaña said. “But I feel like it would only work if Britney comes back and plays her character again. And Taryn Manning does as well, and Anson Mount. And that we write realistic sort of scenarios for them. That would be beautiful.”
She added, of the popularity of sequels in recent years, that “we’ve been living the last 20 years in the world of sequels.” “Usually, you thought that sequels were only for action movies or superhero movies, and now, sequels can live in all kinds of genres,” the actress said.
Crossroads, about three childhood friends, also starred Kim Cattrall and Dan Aykroyd. It was written by Shonda Rhimes and directed by Tamra Davis, and marked Spears’ acting debut. Despite its many negative reviews, the movie has become beloved by fans and developed a loyal audience after its release.
“It was so fun, but it was also, like, the first time that I was around a big pop star,” Saldaña said of collaborating with Spears. “And she was just so sought after, and yet, she was so down to earth and kind and approachable. And I loved that the whole sort of, like, immediate production was all women. Producers, the filmmaker, casting director, the cast — being around an all-woman kind of world gave me just a nice little kick. I was like, ‘Oh, I wanna be like this all the time.’”
Last year, Davis confirmed that Rhimes had “an idea” for a potential sequel, and that Spears’ team is at least looped into the conversation.
“I’m currently working with Van Toffler, who was the producer on it, and he’s [mentioned it]. I think he’s been talking to Britney about it, with her management,” Davis said. “Britney, I don’t think she really wants to act so much, but I know Ann spoke to Shonda about something, and Shonda had an idea, so who knows if that will have life. But if it does, fingers crossed that Shonda’s involved because she’s just so brilliant. You could see on her first feature film what an incredible voice she had and her understanding of female characters.”
Saldaña’s newest film, Emilia Pérez, also sees her working alongside a pop star: Selena Gomez. The musical movie, written and directed by Jacques Audiard, also stars Karla Sofía Gascón, Adriana Paz, Mark Ivanir, and Édgar Ramírez. It’s set to be released in theaters on Nov. 1 before arriving on Netflix on Nov. 13.
