John Macionis, Professor, Kenyon College

Join respected author and Professor, John Macionis, where he discusses the notion of Two Americas and Polarization in today’s society.

In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King claimed in a lecture at Stanford University that "there are literally two Americas." He was calling attention to how race divided Americans. Today, race continues to divide our population, but perhaps even more attention is now directed at a political divide—resulting in red and blue America. There is considerable evidence that political polarization is greater today than at any time in our lives—and, some analysts claim, political and cultural differences may have become irreconcilable. This short presentation describes and assesses the reality of these two Americas.

Professor Macionis will be covering a variety of topics this upcoming semester including Economic Inequality in the United States, Family Trends: Over the Generations, Using Maps to Teach Sociology, Artificial Intelligence, and more.
