Timely Warnings & Emergency Alerts
The PSU Campus Public Safety Office can issue three types of notification messages: Timely Warning Safety Bulletins, Campus Safety Advisories and PSU Alerts. Whether to issue a timely warning, safety advisory or a PSU Alert (and the content of the messages) is decided on a case-by-case basis, considering all the facts, including the nature of the incident, the continuing danger to the campus community, the promotion of safety, and the possible risk of compromising law enforcement efforts.
Timely Warnings
When the Campus Public Safety Office learns of crimes covered by the Clery Act, it will consider whether to issue a campus-wide “timely warning” about the threat. A “timely warning” may be issued if, in the judgment of the Director of the Campus Public Safety Office or the University Vice President of Finance and Administration, a crime or potential crime constitutes a serious or continuing threat to the campus community. Timely warnings are sent by University Communications at the direction of the Chief of Campus Public Safety and the Vice President of Finance and Administration via email to pdx.edu addresses.

Campus Safety Advisory
A Campus Safety Advisory is utilized when there is danger to all or part of the campus community and instruction is needed to ensure safety. Safety Advisories may be sent when a crime or potential crime meets almost all of the criteria for a timely warning and is considered a significant risk to campus or safety-related events on or near campus. For example, an apartment building near campus that is on fire and billowing smoke over campus may warrant a Safety Advisory. These messages are sent via email by University Communications at the direction of the Chief of Campus Public Safety and the Vice President of Finance and Administration to pdx.edu addresses or community partners that may be impacted.
PSU Alerts
If a significant emergency or dangerous situation occurs on campus that, in the judgment of the Director of the Campus Public Safety Office or the University Vice President of Finance and Administration, creates an immediate threat to the health or safety of students or employees, or otherwise warrants a notification, a “PSU Alert” emergency notification can be issued. For example, emergency notifications may include notices of campus closure or delayed opening, a fire, gas leak, or an outbreak of a communicable disease, as well as a notice of a Clery reportable crime.

PSU students, faculty and staff must opt-in to receive PSU Alert messages via text message or phone call. PSU encourages all students, faculty and staff to register for the PSU Alert system.

Clery Act
The Annual Campus Security & Fire Safety Reports are published online in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998.
The intent of these reports is to inform the PSU community of the extent of reported crimes occurring in the previous calendar year. Data is collected from a variety of sources; including Portland Police Bureau, University departments such as the Campus Public Safety, Dean of Students Life, Housing and Residence Life, Athletics Department, Human Resources Center, Global Diversity and Inclusion, and the Women’s Resource Center.
Daily Activity Log/Weekly Blotter
The Portland State University Daily Activity Log contains information on recent crimes and incidents that have occurred on the Portland State University campus and surrounding areas. The Crime & Fire Log (also known as the Activity Log) will be updated within two business days from the occurrence of the crime or incident. If you have any information regarding these crimes that could be helpful, please call 503-725-4407. The Daily Activity Log is available for viewing at Campus Public Safety.
Campus Public Safety also maintains a Weekly Blotter in order to better inform our community about the safety landscape of the PSU campus.
According to Federal Law, an institution may withhold any of the required fields of entry (i.e. Classification, Date, Time, Location, and/or Disposition) if any of the following conditions apply:
- The disclosure is prohibited by law
- If disclosure would jeopardize the confidentiality of the victim
- If disclosure would jeopardize an ongoing criminal investigation or the safety of an individual
- If disclosure would cause a suspect to flee or evade detection
- If disclosure would result in the destruction of evidence
