Sasheer Zamata is publicly living her truth.
In a new, recent interview with Them, the comedian and actress, who most TV fans know from her time as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 2014 to 2017, opens up about how even though she's out in her everyday normal life, she's now ready to share a part of her identity with the world she previously hadn't before.
"I'm out in my life and I do keep my personal life kind of private, but I also don't necessarily want my identity to be private," the 38-year-old actor, who is set to co-star alongside Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, and Joe Locke in the upcoming WandaVision spin-off series Agatha All Along, told the publication. "I guess I'm one of those late-in-life lesbians. I just feel very comfortable and confident in my life."
Elsewhere in her interview with Them, Zamata also opened up about playing queer characters in her past, and how that may have played a role in helping her figure out her own sexuality.
"I kept getting cast as queer women. I played a lesbian on Home Economics. I played a lesbian on Woke. I played a lesbian on Tuca & Bertie. A lesbian on Last O.G. I kept getting these roles. And this is before I myself was figuring out my identity," she shared. "I was like, 'Whoa, what are these casting directors seeing that I’m not seeing?'"
She also spoke openly about the decision to finally share her truth with the public world, and how she felt like keeping her sexuality closed off would have felt like she was "ignoring a part of me."
"No one asks straight people about their journey of discovery, but I guess it felt like if I didn't say anything, I'd be ignoring a part of me, and that doesn't feel very good," she says. "But yeah, I've definitely had thoughts of, not necessarily keeping it a secret, but [that] there's no need to say anything about it."
Congrats, and welcome to the family, Sasheer!
Agatha All Along premieres on Disney+ on September 18.
