Enabling Enterprise Modeling and Integration
The mission of OMG's Business Modeling and Integration Domain Task Force (BMI DTF) is to adopt standards that support management of an enterprise – which may be a commercial business, a government entity, an academic institution, or a nonprofit organization. These specifications promote integration and collaboration of people, systems, business processes, and information across the enterprise, including its business partners and customers. Business process management (BPM) was an important early motivation to rigorously capture an organization's processes, leading to the BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) standard, but the operation and interconnection of extended enterprises now requires a broader set of models.

OMG's growing and evolving family of BMI standards aim to:
- Promote the application of Model-Driven Architecture principles to the enterprise
- Support enterprise architects and business analysts in achieving efficient enterprise management
- Impart rigor to descriptions used to make decisions, develop software, integrate supply chains, automate processes, etc.
- Facilitate interoperability between independently developed components
Notable Deliverables:
Our Business Process Model & Notation (BPMN) is recognized worldwide as the standard for rigorous process modeling. But not all workflows can be specified in advance, so we also adopted the Case Management Model & Notation (CMMN) and the Decision Modeling Notation (DMN) standards, forming a triad of specifications referred to as BPM+. We then complemented it with the Shared Data Model & Notation (SDMN), the Knowledge Package Model & Notation (KPMN), and the Provenance and Pedigree Model & Notation (PPMN).
To support business architects and analysts, we adopted the Business Motivation Model (BMM), the Semantics of Business Value and Business Rules (SBVR), the Business Architecture Core Metamodel (BACM, centered on the core concept of business capabilities) and the Value Delivery Modeling Language (VDML).
The semantics of the information about a business needs to be defined rigorously. An early specification in this area was the Date and Time Vocabulary (DTV). Current efforts listed below continue and augment this effort.
Toward Standard Models of Business Reports and Statistical Datasets:
The Standard Business Report Model (SBRM) aims to help organizations, especially worldwide regulatory agencies, define report models that rigorously specify the rules and constraints that a report's data element must follow. These models will make it possible to develop better reporting tools, and they will be compatible with existing report languages such as XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language). While financial reports will be a primary domain of application, helping meet the mandates of such legislation as the Financial Data Transparency Act (FDTA) in the U.S., SBRM will apply to many domains (such as environmental impact, pharmaceutical trials, corporate governance, etc.). Submissions to the SBRM Request for Proposal are being received and evaluated in 2024.
The Statistics Metadata Interoperability (SMI) specification will facilitate the discovery, understanding, and integration of statistical datasets. Data catalogs usually do not include enough metadata to determine whether, for example, the data categories or the units of measure are compatible across similar reports from different statistical agencies. Submissions to the Request for Proposal are expected in late 2024. Letters of Intent (LOI) to submit are due by 14 October 2024. Other Areas of Interest:
The BMI DTF is interested in additional areas, such as the specification of business/strategic requirements and the modeling of business risks (financial, legal, reputational, etc.).
