DMS Broadening Participation Resources
News and Highlights
- Julia Grigsby and Daniel Krashen receive 2016 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) awards
- Maryam Mirzakhani wins Fields Medal!
Julia Grigsby of Boston College and Daniel Krashen of the University of Georgia were among the 21 NSF PECASE awardees honored at the White House. PECASE recognizes scientists and engineers who show exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Winners demonstrate the ability to broadly advance fundamental research and help the United States maintain its position as a leading producer of scientists and engineers.
Maryam Mirzakhani is the first woman to ever win the Fields Medal known as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics" in recognition of her contributions to the understanding of the symmetry of curved surfaces.
DMS funding opportunities to help broaden participation
- Dear Colleague Letter: Further Strengthening Research Capacity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities
- Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MSPRF)
- MPS Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate - Graduate Research Supplements (AGEP-GRS)
- Facilitating Research at Primarily Undergraduate Institutions
- Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
The purpose of the Mathematical Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (MSPRF) is to support future leaders in mathematics and statistics by facilitating their participation in postdoctoral research environments that will have maximal impact on their future scientific development. There are two options for awardees: Research Fellowship and Research Instructorship. Awards will support research in areas of mathematics and statistics, including applications to other disciplines.
This opportunity is available to PIs with current MPS research awards whose institutions and/or academic units are either currently participating in the EHR-sponsored "Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate" (AGEP) program; or whose institutions and/or academic units have participated in the AGEP program in the past (AGEP Legacy institutions). Such PIs may apply to MPS for a supplement to defray the costs for: stipend, tuition, benefits and indirect costs for a graduate research student working on the MPS-funded research.
The Research in Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) and Research Opportunity Awards (ROA) funding opportunities support research by faculty members at predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUIs). RUI proposals support PUI faculty in research that engages them in their professional field(s), builds capacity for research at their home institution, and supports the integration of research and undergraduate education. ROAs similarly support PUI faculty research, but these awards typically allow faculty to work as visiting scientists at research-intensive organizations where they collaborate with other NSF-supported investigators.
REU Sites are an important means for extending high-quality research environments and mentoring to diverse groups of students. In addition to increasing the participation of underrepresented groups in research, the program aims to involve students in research who might not otherwise have the opportunity, particularly those from academic institutions where research programs in STEM are limited. Thus, a significant fraction of the student participants at an REU Site must come from outside the host institution or organization, and at least half of the student participants must be recruited from academic institutions where research opportunities in STEM are limited (including two-year colleges).
Programs in the mathematics and statistics communities designed to broaden participation
- Women and Mathematics (WAM) at the Princeton Institute for Advanced Study
- WATCH US (Women Achieving Through Community Hubs) in the United States
- An Innovative Bridge Program for Mentoring BS-MS Fast-Track Students towards PhDs in Mathematical Sciences
- RE-C^2: Research Experiences in Community Colleges
- Partnership for Undergraduate Research: Enhancing the Mathematics Curriculum (PUR)
- Graduate Readiness and Access in Mathematics (GRAM) Program
- Timed for a Successful Career: NSF/AWM Travel Grants for Women in the Mathematical Sciences
- US-Africa Collaborative Research Network in Mathematical Sciences
The program brings together research mathematicians with undergraduate and graduate students on the campus of the Institute for Advanced Study and is designed to address issues of gender imbalance in mathematics. Activities include lectures and seminars on a focused mathematical topic, mentoring, discussions on peer relations, an introduction to career opportunities and a women in sciences seminar.
Organizations within the mathematics and statistics communities and professional societies with the goal of broadening participation
- Mathematical Sciences Institutes Diversity Committee
- Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM)
- Women in Mathematics (WiM)
- The National Alliance for Doctoral Studies in the Mathematical Sciences
- Diversity Program of the American Mathematical Society (AMS)
- National Association of Mathematicians (NAM)
Mathematical sciences institutes in North America, including the NSF Mathematical Sciences Institutes, have formed a committee with the goal of joining together in their efforts to support the participation of underrepresented groups in the mathematical sciences, including women, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, and persons with disabilities.
