A third party candidate typically refers to anyone running for the U.S. presidency who is not the Republican or Democratic nominee. They are often the representative of a smaller political party, such as the Green Party, or an independent. Whilst a third party candidate is highly unlikely to win the presidency, their presence can impact the race considerably, and can pull enough votes to impact the final result.
