Outer Banks Will End with a Fifth and Final Season

    'Outer Banks' Season 5 Announcement.

Set in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the first two seasons of the series follow the adventure-seeking friend group as they hop onto cargo ships, sneak into abandoned churches, and break into opulent mansions. Season 3 picks up with the Pogues living their best lives on a deserted island that they’ve deemed Poguelandia and ends with them finding the City of Gold in South America (well, IRL, it’s Barbados). Season 4 sees the Pogues choosing to spend their newfound gold the Pogue-iest way ever — by building their own Poguelandia oasis at home in the OBX. But the adventure is far from over and leads them all the way to Morocco in the Season 4 finale. Like we mentioned, this group gets around. Experience what it means to be a “Pogue 4 Life” by taking a tour of the Outer Banks filming locations — from the coast of South Carolina to the beaches of the Bahamas, Barbados, and Morocco.

Season 1

Episode 1
A “Welcome to the Outer Banks, Paradise on Earth” sign greets visitors as they enter Kildare Island.

Kildare Island
Commonly referred to as the “Outer Banks” in the show, this fictional barrier island off the coast of North Carolina is a beach town with feuds aplenty. Outer Banks is mainly set on Kildare Island, which is split into two territories: Figure 8 on the north side where the wealthy Kooks reside and the Cut on the south side where the lower-income Pogues live.

Filming location: Although Kildare is an imagined place, the Outer Banks are real barrier islands in North Carolina home to coastal sites including Dare County and the town of Kill Devil Hills. However, the series films primarily around Charleston, South Carolina. The Pogues’ waterfront boat scenes are mainly filmed on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant, a tourist town located eight miles east of Charleston.

JJ, Kiara, and Pope stand inside Heyward's Seafood restaurant.

Heyward’s Seafood
In the world of the show, you can’t make a trip to Kildare without paying a visit to Heyward’s Seafood. Owned by Pope’s (Jonathan Daviss) dad Heyward (E. Roger Mitchell), this joint is located right on the shore and is known for its fresh shrimp. When he’s not out hunting treasure with the Pogues, Pope helps his dad out around the restaurant.

Filming location: The real-life Geechie Seafood is a fresh seafood market located along Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant.

Exterior shot of Tannyhill Estate with white columns and ivy growing up the white building

Tannyhill Plantation
Located in Figure 8, the Tannyhill Plantation is home to Sarah Cameron (Madelyn Cline) and her family. This mansion is an architectural dream with white Doric columns, a spacious green lawn, and a spiral staircase which seems custom-made for dramatic family entrances. The property once belonged to Denmark Tanny, a formerly enslaved man who was the sole survivor of the Royal Merchant shipwreck in the 19th century and the alleged source of the treasure at the core of the plot of Outer Banks.

Filming location: Lowndes Grove sits along the banks of the Ashley River in Charleston. The 14-acre estate was built in 1786 and is now a venue for weddings and events.

John B walks through the hallway of The Chateau.

The Chateau
John B (Chase Stokes) lives at the Chateau and still maintains the residence even after the disappearance of his dad, Big John (Charles Halford). Charming in its own way, this property also serves as a meeting ground for his Pogue friends. There’s a backyard decked out in fairy lights, a boat dock for easy water transportation, and even a chicken coop (used mostly to hide from bounty hunters).

Filming location: Scenes at the Chateau are filmed in the Secessionville Historic District in Charleston.

Bird's-eye view shot of the teens partying on a beach

The Boneyard
The Cut meets Figure 8 at the Boneyard. John B describes this popular beach hangout spot as a “three-layer burrito,” where the scrappy Pogues, preppy Kooks, and clueless Tourons, aka tourists, come together to party. However, drinking beer with your sworn enemies isn’t always a fun time. The Boneyard is where John B and Topper (Austin North) get into a drunken brawl in Episode 1.

Filming location: Hunting Island, a state park located 15 miles east of Beaufort, South Carolina, is the perfect stand-in for the Boneyard due to its sandy beaches and sprawling driftwood. It is, however, primarily known for its historic lighthouse (see below) and nature trails.

Episode 2
John B, Rudy, Pope, and Kiara stand outside the lighthouse.

Redfield Lighthouse
After finding his dad’s compass in the Royal Merchant wreckage, John B and Kiara (Madison Bailey) go to the Redfield Lighthouse hoping to get more answers about Big John and the shipwreck’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, the visit doesn’t go as planned when the lighthouse keeper grows suspicious of the teens and calls the cops on them.

Filming location: The Hunting Island Lighthouse is located in Hunting Island, South Carolina. Although it’s no longer functioning, this historic landmark is the only publicly accessible lighthouse in South Carolina.

Kiara and John B have a discussion inside The Wreck restaurant.

The Wreck
Just like Pope’s family, Kiara’s is also in the restaurant business. Owned by her parents, the Wreck serves as a popular hangout spot for the Pogues. Kiara is often busy waiting tables and serving customers — but, much to her parents’ dismay, she isn’t afraid to ditch work to help her friends when they’re in trouble.

Filming location: The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene is the real restaurant where scenes featuring Kiara’s family’s business were filmed. This laid-back seafood dive is located on the banks of Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant. The restaurant is named after a boat wrecked there during Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

Episode 3
Bird's-eye view shot of the Kooks standing in a circle on the beach.

Surfrider cleanup
As much as the Kooks love a good beach party, they also understand the importance of preserving their natural habitat. In Episode 3, Sarah, Topper, and their Kook friends spend the day cleaning up the Masonboro beach.

Filming location: Hunting Island State Park is a popular destination for surfing, bonfires, and camping. The beach cleanup is based on an annual post–Fourth of July event that takes place on Masonboro Island in North Carolina.

Episode 4
John B and Sarah walk into Ben Silver to shop.

Ben Silver
John B and Sarah grow even closer when they take a secret day trip to the UNC Law Library in Chapel Hill to gather clues about Denmark Tanny. Before hitting the books, they stop into Ben Silver so that Sarah can give John B a much-needed makeover.

Filming location: Ben Silver on King Street in downtown Charleston is a go-to spot for Kook clothing. This historic district is a popular shopping and dining hub.

Exterior shot of the UNC Law Library at night with lit-up windows

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Law Library
After moving into the Tannyhill Plantation, Ward Cameron (Charles Esten) donated Denmark Tanny’s diary, almanac, and other records to the UNC Law Library in Chapel Hill. In an effort to gather more clues, John B and Sarah dig through the archives there.

Filming location: These scenes were filmed at the Charleston Gaillard Center, a nonprofit arts center in downtown Charleston that hosts music, dance, comedy, and theater performances.

John B and Sarah are standing on the dock drenched in rain.

Ferry dock
Their day trip might be over, but the chemistry is just beginning for John B and Sarah. Upon their return from UNC Chapel Hill, the pair share their first kiss at the ferry dock in the rain.

Filming location: On their trip home, John B and Sarah take the Carolina Belle, a boat operated by Charleston Harbor Tours. As for their first kiss, the romantic scene was filmed on the Charleston Maritime Center pier.

Episode 5
John B stands next to Mr. Sunn at his desk in the classroom.

Kildare County High School
Yes, the Pogues actually go to school… well, sometimes. John B stops by Mr. Sunn’s (Chris Gerard) classroom to get some help translating Denmark Tanny’s letter, which is written in Gullah, a creole language.

Filming location: Outer Banks’ high school scenes are filmed at a local middle school in Charleston.

Exterior shot of the Island Club.

Island Club
The Kooks’ Midsummers soirée is hosted at Island Club, a bougie country club in Figure 8. For one night, Kildare’s Kooks put on their finest gowns and pastel-colored suits for an evening of drinks and dancing. Meanwhile, the Pogues must work their shift, serving their rivals.

Filming location: Kiawah Island Golf Resort serves as the setting for this lavish Kook affair. The premier luxury beach resort offers guests championship golf and five-star amenities.

Topper and Sarah stand at the top of the tower at night after John B is pushed off the ledge.

Hawk’s Nest tower
After seeing John B and Sarah kiss at Island Club, Topper catches the pair sneaking off to the top of the Hawk’s Nest tower. In a jealous rage, he pushes John B over the ledge — literally.

Filming location: The Palmetto Park Islands Observation Tower in Mount Pleasant is a prime spot if you’re looking for a good view of the marshland and trees in Palmetto Islands County Park.

Episode 6
Exterior shot of the Crain House

Crain House
Using the Tannyhill Plantation map, the Pogues sneak into a creepy old house owned by the mysterious Crain family, where they believe the gold is hidden. The friends make their way into the basement and discover a well that might hold the treasure.

Filming location: The home used as the Crain residence is located in Charleston.

Episode 7
Exterior shot of a brick church with a red bell tower.

John B’s bell tower
There’s no place more romantic than an abandoned church. John B takes Sarah to his secret spot and shows her the bell tower he likes to go to. Big John used to frequent this old relic when he was younger, and now John B is keeping his father’s tradition alive. In Episode 9, Rafe (Drew Starkey) burns down the church while John B and Sarah are hiding there after Sheriff Peterkin’s (Adina Porter) murder.

Filming location: The Old Bethel AME Church is an abandoned Civil War–era church located in McClellanville, South Carolina.

Season 2

Episode 1
JJ confronts Topper and his Kook friends at the Island Inn.

Island Inn
While working his summer job serving Kooks at the Island Inn, JJ (Rudy Pankow) overhears Topper and his friends speculating about how John B killed Sheriff Peterkin. Fed up with the rumors, he gets into a scuffle with them and ends up fired from his job.

Filming location: The Seabrook Island Beach Club is a vacation destination in Seabrook Island, South Carolina.

Sarah and John B look out into the Bahamas.

Nassau, the Bahamas
Although presumed dead, John B and Sarah have actually been rescued by Captain Terrance (Terence Rosemore) and his crew on their way to Nassau, the Bahamas. However, when Terrance discovers that John B and Sarah are wanted, the teens have to escape into the streets of Nassau.

Filming location: Outer Banks actually filmed in Barbados, not the Bahamas. The street scenes took place in the Careenage area of Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados.

John B and Sarah walk toward the pink Fairmont Hotel.

Fairmont Hotel
John B and Sarah seek refuge in this five-star hotel after fleeing Captain Terrance and his crew members. The Fairmont Hotel was a regular vacation spot for the Camerons back in the day.

Filming location: The Fairmont Royal Pavilion is a luxury oceanfront resort in Barbados.

John B and Sarah run and hide inside the Ward family's vacation home at night.

Paradise Island
As if the Camerons’ residence at Tannyhill wasn’t already extravagant enough, their vacation home in the Bahamas shows you just how well off they are. John B and Sarah break into the mansion with Terrance and Cleo (Carlacia Grant) to find the hidden $400 million in gold that Ward stole.

Filming location: The Royal Westmoreland, Barbados, is a golf and beach resort in Saint James, Barbados.

Episode 3
Shot of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge as the Pogues drive over

Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge
As John B and Sarah travel back to the Outer Banks after a dangerous trip to Nassau, they pass by the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge just as their Pogue friends JJ, Kiara, and Pope drive over the viaduct.

Filming location: The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge is a 1,546-foot long viaduct that connects Charleston to Mount Pleasant.

Episode 4
Exterior shot of a three-story house with columns

27 King Street
Pope, JJ, and Kiara travel to Charleston to meet with a mysterious woman named Carla Limbrey (Elizabeth Mitchell). When they arrive at 27 King Street, only Pope is allowed inside the home. During their meeting, Carla reveals that she has a recording that proves Rafe killed Sheriff Peterkin. In exchange, she wants Pope to hand over the Denmark Key. There’s just one problem — Pope has no idea what that is or where to find it.

Filming location: Carla’s home was filmed at the Edmondston-Alston House in the Battery, a historic promenade in Charleston. The mansion was completed in 1828 and is now a house museum.

Episode 5
JJ visits John B, who's wearing an orange jumpsuit, in jail.

Kildare County Detention Center
Life behind bars is even more dangerous than treasure hunting for John B. As he awaits his fate, JJ pays a visit and devises an elaborate plan to get his best friend out of jail. Before they can put this escape into action, an inmate is paid to strangle John B to death, but ultimately fails.

Filming location: The detention center was filmed at the International Diving Institute in North Charleston.

Pope pulls up to Guerin’s Pharmacy on his bike at night.

Guerin’s Pharmacy
Pope’s father reveals that his grandmother used to wear the Denmark Key around her neck. The mission to find the key brings Pope to his grandma’s old apartment, located above Guerin’s Pharmacy. After a thorough search, he finds the key hidden in her ceiling.

Filming location: Guerin’s Pharmacy is located on Main Street in Summerville, South Carolina.

Episode 8
The Pogues find the Cross of Santo Domingo in an abandoned church.

Freedman’s Assembly of God
The Pogues are up against Carla and Rafe to find the seven-foot Cross of Santo Domingo. They make their way to an old abandoned church after reading this clue in a spyglass: “You’ve come this far, do not falter. The cross is on the Freedman’s altar.” To their disappointment, the cross is nowhere to be seen. However, upon further inspection, Pope discovers that it’s actually built into the structure of the church.

Filming location: Freedman’s exterior was filmed at the St. Thomas & St. Denis Parish in Charleston. The church was the scene of the 1876 Cainhoy Massacre, a deadly race riot between Black and white South Carolinians in the months leading up to the gubernatorial election of that year.

Episode 10
The Pogues relax on the beach in Poguelandia.

Poguelandia
It’s a wild ride for the Pogues. The teens hide in the Camerons’ cargo ship that’s en route to Guadalupe and plan a takeover to rescue Sarah. However, they ultimately lose the Cross of Santo Domingo to the Camerons and jump off the ship into a lifeboat. There’s truly nothing left to lose as they wash ashore onto a deserted island, which JJ calls Poguelandia.

Filming location: Bathsheba Beach in Barbados is known for its dramatic rock formations along the shoreline.

Season 3

Episode 1
A plane crashes in the ocean in 'Outer Banks.'

Plane crash
The Pogues have survived just about every type of accident at this point, so why not throw a plane crash into the fold? After being rescued from Poguelandia by a private plane, the rescue mission goes south (literally) when the teens, suspecting the pilot works with Ward, ambush him and crash the aircraft into the ocean. As the rest of the Pogues swim to shore, Kiara goes back to save the injured pilot but ends up getting captured.

Filming location: The cast filmed the crash in the waters of Port St. Charles, a Caribbean marina and resort near Speightstown, Barbados.

Barbados landscape in ‘Outer Banks’

Barbados
Paradise in Poguelandia is short-lived, and the teens soon find themselves on a rescue mission in Barbados. Carlos Singh (Andy McQueen) holds Kiara captive at his compound, and the Pogues must find a way to get their friend back. During their time on the island, they’re seen running around its city streets.

Filming location: Bridgetown, the capital city, serves as the backdrop for most of the Pogues’ Barbados adventures.

The exterior of a luxury property in Barbados.

The Camerons’ Guadalupe estate
By Season 3, the Camerons have fled to their mansion in Guadalupe with the Cross of Santo Domingo. There, Ward tasks Rafe with the job of selling the treasure for a fortune.

Filming location: The exterior of this luxury property is one of many vacation homes along Cattlewash Beach on the eastern coast of Barbados.

The Lion Castle Estate in St. Thomas, Barbados

Carlos Singh’s estate
Singh’s estate is no vacation home for Kiara and Rafe, who are locked inside with tight security roaming the premises. While there, they learn that Singh is after Denmark Tanny’s original diary, which he believes holds clues that will lead him to El Dorado.

Filming location: The Lion Castle Estate in St. Thomas, Barbados, is a historic site that includes a plantation house, apartment buildings, and cottages.

Episode 2
St. John Parish Church in Barbados.

Big John’s bell tower
Back in OBX, before he was lost at sea, Big John would call his son John B home by ringing a bell tower. As the Pogues are running around Barbados, Big John rings the bell of an old church in the hope that his son will hear and come searching for him. At the end of Episode 2, John B leaves his friends at the dock and follows the sounds of the bell, which leads him to an old church on a hill.

Filming location: St. John Parish Church is an Anglican church located near Hackleton’s cliff in St. John, Barbados. The current building, constructed in 1836, replaced previous structures destroyed in storms including the original, built around 1645, believed to be one of the oldest churches on the island.

Episode 3
The Charleston Museum

Charleston Museum
One of the stops on Big John and John B’s hunt for artifacts is the Charleston Museum. Posing as a paleogenetics professor from the University of South Carolina, Big John tries to convince the museum staff to let him view pieces excavated from the Trinity Church, but fails. Later that night, they sneak back in and pull off a heist to steal the missing piece of the Gnomon of Solana, a stone object that they believe will help lead them to El Dorado.

Filming location: The Charleston Museum is the oldest museum in the United States, located in downtown Charleston.

Episode 9
St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center

Kitty Hawk Adventure Therapy
Before the Pogues fly to South America to save Big John, they all go home to say their farewells. Kiara has prepared a speech for her parents, but they ambush her, and two representatives from Kitty Hawk Adventure Therapy drag her away to their behavioral camp.

Filming location: St. Christopher Camp and Conference Center is located in Seabrook Island, South Carolina.

Episode 10
The Welchman Hall Gully

El Dorado cave
Big John, John B, and Sarah race through the South American jungle, trying to reach El Dorado before Singh does. They finally arrive at a cave that looks promising, but Big John is too injured to proceed after being shot by Singh. It’s up to John B and Sarah to find El Dorado alone.

Filming location: Although on the show El Dorado ends up being located in South America, the cast and crew filmed the jungle scenes in Barbados. The Welchman Hall Gully is a tropical park open to the public for hiking along its nature trails, cave tours, and wild monkey sightings.

Season 4

Episode 1
7-Eleven

7-Eleven
The local 7-Eleven is where the Pogues find out just how much they’ve won in the G game when they use the ATM and see the balance of their joint account. But just because they’ve got some money now doesn’t mean they’re Kooks, OK!

Filming location: Crosby’s Fish & Shrimp Company is located in Charleston (where most of the show is filmed).

Poguelandia 2.0

Poguelandia 2.0
Now that the Pogues finally have some money, how are they going to spend it? By building their dream home on JJ’s dad Luke’s (Gary Weeks) property that just went up for auction! “We knew the people who own that area and there’s just a bunch of land out there, so we were able to build this two-story shop and this dock at the end of the water that plays a big part in the story,” Daviss told Netflix. Bailey deems it “the ultimate spot.”

We see the Pogues build their home-slash-business from scratch in the show. Stokes was in town while production was constructing it, so he actually helped nail in some floorboards before filming at Poguelandia 2.0 began. “I was doing all of these random things around there, and I realized, ‘Oh, I’m getting some sweat equity in this building as Chase and not as John B,’ ” said Stokes.

Filming location: The Maybank property is located in Charleston and is basically the gang’s replacement Chateau after Topper burned it down in a jealous rage last season. “It’s like they took what they loved about the Chateau and then expanded on that,” said Stokes. The upstairs of Poguelandia 2.0 is especially reminiscent of the Chateau, which Cline says “made us as a cast really happy because the Chateau was always really special and really fun to shoot. That’s still, to this day, my favorite set that we’ve ever had.”

The Enduro race at the beach

The Enduro race at the beach
Ever impulsive, JJ bets the Pogues’ last gold nugget that he’ll win the local Enduro dirt bike race at the beach. What have they got to lose? Well, as John B says, “We have everything to lose this time.”

Filming location: Fort Fisher State Recreation Area at Kure Beach in North Carolina is the only beach in the system that allows four-wheel-drive beach access. During warm weather months, loggerhead sea turtles come to nest along the park’s sandy shores, which we know would fill Kiara’s environmentally conscious heart with joy to see.

The Enduro race at the beach

The Enduro race in the woods
The Enduro route takes John B, JJ, Rafe, and Topper beyond the sands of the OBX and into the nearby woodlands. However, Stokes, Pankow, and Starkey will tell you that it wasn’t really them doing that much dirt-bike racing. “I got to ride, like, eight feet on a dirt bike and do a little burnout [trick],” says Starkey. “That was the only time they’ve ever let me on a bike.” Stokes calls it Starkey’s “Darth Vader moment.”

Filming location: Copperhead Ranch is located in Rocky Point, North Carolina, and is a good hour away from where they filmed the beach portions of the race. Another interesting fact: Stokes’ stunt performer for the Enduro, Levi Gilbert, was also his double in his new Netflix film Uglies. Gilbert comes from a long line of stunt performers in Hollywood — his grandfather was Paul Newman’s double!

Blackstone Manor on Goat Island

Blackstone Manor on Goat Island
After the Pogues lose the Enduro to the Kooks (yikes), they realize they need $13,000 to pay their property taxes on Poguelandia in a week’s time. So they take Wes Genrette (David Jensen) up on his offer to investigate Blackbeard’s treasure and head to his stately home on Goat Island to meet with him and his son-in-law, Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane).

Filming location: As soon as the Pogues show up to Sandfly Bluff in Charleston, they immediately feel less at ease than they did minutes before. None of them know anyone who’s been to Goat Island, but they’ve all heard the rumors that a possessed woman drowned with her baby. But, hey, that’s par for the course when you’re back in the G game — and really need money.

Episode 2
Inside Blackstone Manor

Inside Blackstone Manor
Things just get weirder for the Pogues when they go inside to talk about the offer on the table. Genrette wants their help to find a lost amulet on Blackbeard’s sunken ship to break a family curse, as his ancestors have been haunted by the ghost of Blackbeard’s wife Elizabeth for 300 years. This is definitely a first for the Pogues.

Filming location: It doesn’t get more stately than filming at the Admiral’s House and Quarter’s G in North Charleston.

Uncle Roger Heyward’s House

Uncle Roger Heyward’s House
If the Pogues want to find this amulet and get $50,000 (on top of the initial $5,000 Genrette handed over), then they’re gonna need the coordinates of Blackbeard’s vessel. Their first stop is to see Pope’s uncle Roger, who’s a part of the Coast Guard. But he’s as straitlaced as they come, so he won’t share the deets. Pope asked as covertly as possible, but still, he tells his pals afterward, “I don’t think he’s ever going to look at me the same way again.”

Filming location: The Heyward family’s cookout at Uncle Roger’s is located in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. At this gathering, we see more of Pope’s extended family.

Rockfish Bar

Rockfish Bar
The second option is chatting up JJ’s friend Boogie, who’s in the reserves living paycheck to paycheck. JJ and John B go to see him at his marina haunt, knowing that getting the info out of him is going to cost them, but it’s worth it. The price? JJ’s dirt bike. Rough gig, man.

Filming location: Bowens Island Restaurant is a real restaurant you can visit in Charleston.

Hollis’ boat.

Hollis’ boat
After local realtor Hollis Robinson (Brianna Brown) meets Rafe at a Kook party, she invites him to her boat with a business proposal: to go in on Goat Island. She asks him to be a partner in syndicating the land, but the deal seems too good to be true.

Filming location: Hollis’ boat, along with a lot of the Kooks’ premier yachts, is located in Toler’s Cove Marina in Mount Pleasant.

The hospital

The hospital
Once the crew snags the coordinates, Kiara and JJ dive down 80-feet deep to retrieve the amulet. But they aren’t the only ones down there, and they narrowly escape an attack by a mercenary named Lightner (Rigo Sanchez). After they come back up for air, Kie and JJ get the bends so they have to stay in the hospital overnight.

Filming location: May Forest State Park in Charleston is the home of the hospital this season in OBX. While Kie and JJ’s dive in the show definitely looked intense, that was nothing next to Bailey and Pankow’s training to learn how to scuba. “It’s something I didn’t think I would do!” says Bailey, who went to Catalina Island and scuba dived all the way down with fish surrounding her. “I had this deep sense of, ‘I don’t belong here,’” she says with a laugh. When it came time to film the scene, she and Pankow actually were in a more contained, man-made pool. “It’s less life or death, because if you have an emergency, you can just go right back up to the top,” she says.

Episode 3
Rafe’s house

Rafe’s house
This season, Rafe’s got a new crib and an official girlfriend, Sofia (Fiona Palomo). He confides in her about whether he should accept the deal with Hollis.

Filming location: Rafe’s new digs are also in Mount Pleasant. “He’s just operating in different waters,” says Starkey. “It’s interesting to see him in a space where he has someone that he really cares about that’s not his immediate family and someone he feels safe with and protected with and can confide in.”

Islamic Center

Islamic Center
As the brains of the operation, Pope knows how to clean the barnacles off the amulet — using chemistry, of course. Then, the Pogues see there’s an inscription written in Kufic Arabic script, which likely leads to more of Blackbeard’s treasure. Thankfully, John B remembers his dad’s old Muslim friend can understand the language, and he and Sarah get the translation from him: “From the half-moon to the lost star where the living and dead collide, the gatekeeper will guide the way.” To the Pogues’ riddle-attuned ears, it sounds like directions.

Filming location: The Islamic Center is located in North Charleston, but the Pogues don’t stay there for long after Big John’s friend realizes the amulet is cursed!

Sofia’s house

Sofia’s house
We also see a glimpse of Sofia’s home life — and she’s actually a Pogue, just like Rafe’s father once was. Her dad is friends with Hollis, who wants Sofia’s help to convince Rafe to accept the deal.

Filming location: Sofia’s home is in Charleston. Stokes personally loved Starkey’s scenes with Palomo. “It was nice to see that dynamic shift,” he says. Starkey says it was “almost like playing a different character, to tap into a bit of calmness [with her].”

Episode 4
Mr. Sunn’s house

Mr. Sunn’s house
Not one to waste time, Pope doesn’t take the day off for a “swell day” and instead goes to see Mr. Sunn to get his take on what the inscription means. He suggests that Pope check out everywhere Blackbeard landed and cross-reference with “half-moon,” and maybe the Pogues will get lucky.

Filming location: The Pogues’ favorite teacher’s residence is in Johns Island, South Carolina.

Episode 5
Charleston church cemetery

Charleston church cemetery
All Pope’s research takes him, John B, Sarah, and Cleo to Charleston. They head inland from the “half-moon” Battery until Sarah sees a “north star” on the stained glass window of a church overlooking a cemetery, where “the living and the dead collide.” Sarah really knows how to solve a riddle, doesn’t she?

Filming location: Circular Congregational Church and its cemetery — where John B also sees the grave of his ancestor — is located in Charleston.

Charleston church cemetery interior

Inside the church
Pope finds the entrance to the catacombs where Blackbeard’s treasure might be under the altar of the church.

Filming location: The interior of the church that plays a central role in the hunt for Blackbeard’s treasure is actually a different church from the exterior shot. The inside of the church is the Unitarian Church, which is also in Charleston.

The Catacombs

The Catacombs
Sarah and Pope go deep into the bellows of the church. And, boy, is it nasty down there — specifically the rats they encounter. Daviss and Cline confirm those were real. Carlacia Grant (who plays Cleo) jokes they were in the “ratacombs.” But Pope and Sarah aren’t the only adventurers sleuthing. Lightner and his boss, Dalia (Pollyanna McIntosh), find the coffin of Blackbeard’s navigator and take a scroll hidden inside it. They exit a different way, but Part 1 ends with Pope and Sarah locked in and trapped as the water is starting to rise higher and higher. Eek.

Filming location: The interiors of the catacombs and crypt were filmed in the Old Exchange Building (Provost) in Charleston.

Episode 6
Zeasy Realty Co.

Zeasy Realty Co.
After the town council meeting goes south, JJ decides to take back what’s his by trashing realtor Dale Zeasy’s (Jason Davis) office in Figure 8. In case you forgot, Dale’s the sleazy guy that tried to buy Luke’s land at the auction in Episode 1 so he could build a (Kook) club. He lost out to the Pogues back then, which makes it all the more upsetting when Luke confirms in Episode 6 that he gave Dale a signed promissory note for the land in exchange for amnesty. Translation? The Pogues’ purchase of the Maybank property is invalid, and Luke’s betrayed his adoptive son yet again.

Filming location: Zeasy’s office is located at the Gatekeepers Inn at Quarters F in North Charleston. That’s the spot where the police converge after JJ leaves a trail of destruction across town on his way there. To prevent his best friend from getting shot, Pope knocks down a cop and gets arrested. “Remember when all he cared about was a scholarship? Now it’s just [to] stay out of jail,” Daviss tells Tudum. While he’s ordinarily known as the “brains of the operation,” Daviss would say he’s also the “heart of the operation. Pope’s always been that way of, ‘I’m going to stand up for the people I love. I’m going to put myself on the line.’ ”

Episode 7
Groff’s boathouse

Groff’s boathouse
JJ confronts Groff on Goat Island because, after losing Poguelandia 2.0, why shouldn’t he try to find out once and for all if Luke was lying about his birth parents, too? Potentially bonding with his real dad is “the only thing he has hope for in that moment,” Pankow tells Tudum. “He’s like, ‘OK, who the heck am I now? I might as well try to hope for the best here.’ ” Disappointingly, Groff at first shakes it off and gaslights JJ, but their conversation is interrupted when Dalia’s mercenaries show up to kidnap Groff.

Bighearted Pogue that he is, JJ helps Groff flee to a boathouse on the north end of the island instead of just saving himself. Shockingly, Groff’s skiff is the Albatross, the boat that Larissa drowned on, and, even worse, it’s a total goner. It’s only when JJ is about to leave Groff to face his foes alone that Groff actually admits that he’s his father.

Filming location: Groff’s Goat Island boathouse is part of Richmond Plantation in South Carolina. In the series, only one boat is lodged there, the Albatross, which Groff somehow retrieved after it sank.

Pitt St. Pharmacy.

Pitt St. Pharmacy
In the midst of the Pogues’ search for JJ, Sarah needs to make a pit stop at the local drugstore to (secretly) take a pregnancy test. As Sarah’s reeling from the confirmation, Kiara comes in to check on her and becomes her confidante in this really challenging moment. “I was really happy that it was written that the first person that Sarah tells is Kiara,” Cline tells Tudum. “Honestly, I feel like that’s what anyone would do: seek out the counsel of your closest girlfriend or someone who can understand and relate and isn’t going to judge or immediately have some sort of reaction. I think that’s what Sarah’s wanting and needing in that moment.”

Filming location: The pharmacy on Kildare’s Main Street is in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Episode 8
Military recruiter’s office

Military recruiter’s office
Pope’s Uncle Roger helps work out a deal where if Pope joins the Marines, he won’t have to go to jail. That means basic training for three months with no communication with the Pogues, plus a legally binding promise to serve in the US Marine Corps for no less than four years. “They’re really giving him an ultimatum. School is not even an option anymore,” Daviss tells Tudum. He and Cleo make a new “No Goodbyes Club” (a callback to last season’s “No Love Club”), and Cleo gives him a bracelet from Terrance to remind him of her. “In a lot of ways, I think that Heyward blames her for Pope’s choices, when the truth is, she would tell Pope, ‘You should stay in school,’ ” says Grant. “He does whatever he wants to do.” But when the time comes to sign on the dotted line, Pope just can’t do it and runs straight back to Cleo.

Filming location: Pope’s meeting with the Marine Corps is at Quarters J in North Charleston, South Carolina. Ditching the future his family set up for him just “motivates him to go on the rest of this adventure, to truly go for the Blue Crown,” says Daviss. At this point, it’s a “ ‘might as well’ kind of situation.”

Hollis’ condo

Hollis’ condo
After Groff knocks Kiara out and locks her in a cooler (no kidding), he picks up JJ, and they go to his (business) partner Hollis’ house.

Filming location: Hollis used to clean houses, and now she sells them. Her success landed her a home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Episode 9
The Shoals

The Shoals
The Pogues are on the hunt to borrow a boat that’ll take them across the Atlantic to Morocco, Groff, and the Blue Crown. But their plan goes haywire when their boat starts leaking, and they have to crash-land on the shoals of the OBX. Shoupe finds them there, and instead of arresting Pope and JJ (who Groff put on the hook for Hollis’ murder), Rafe convinces him to let them go capture Groff. In bringing a real killer to justice and “solving the crime of the century,” as Rafe says, Shoupe will have a very nice reelection package he can run on.

Filming location: The shallow landing where the Pogues regroup is at Fort Johnson in Charleston, South Carolina. Although the trade with Shoupe somewhat makes sense, Grant and Daviss are still shocked he actually let them go. “Shoupe is one of those small-town sheriffs that can be easily bribed,” says Grant. “I’m sure he has the best intentions, but the way that we continue to outsmart this deputy is beyond me.” After Rafe killed Sheriff Peterkin in Season 1, Daviss thinks that “they got rid of the only competent cop in that town. Everybody else has been bumbling around since.”

Moroccan beach

Moroccan beach
After surviving a storm so terrifying that Episode 9 is literally called “The Storm,” the Pogues (and Rafe) wash up on a beach in Morocco. They’re devastated after losing Sarah and JJ in the treacherous waters, but all hope isn’t lost. The next morning, Sarah and JJ show up further down the shoreline from the Pogues. “I remember hearing rumblings of Morocco at the end of shooting last season, and I was like, ‘No way. That’s very far,’ ” said Cline. “My first thought was, ‘How the hell did they get over there?’ I mean, of course they find a way.”

Filming location: The Pogues swap shoals for dunes when they land on the Moroccan beach of Cap Hadid. “It was really dry being in the desert, but it was cool because we had all these dirt dunes,” said Grant.

Episode 10
Essaouira, Morocco

Essaouira, Morocco
Once the Pogues and Rafe trek their way to Morocco to find Groff, they’re really in the port city of Essaoiura. As the Outer Banks creators were planning out Season 4, they were really excited about Morocco as a potential location for the Pogues to visit. So they started researching how they could take the story there. “A lot of times, we’ll bend the story into a location that we’re interested in, that we think will be cinematic,” says Josh Pate. The Pogues are always on the water, so, for them, “the fish-out-of-water place to be would be the desert. So, ‘Pogue hell’ in some ways.”

Filming location: In the Season 4 finale, the Pogues explore the medinas (old parts of the city) and wharf of Essaouira, which was formerly known as Mogador. The creators nodded to the port city’s original name by dubbing the scroll everyone’s been searching for all season (that leads the way to the Blue Crown treasure) the Mogador Scroll.

Agapenta

Agapenta
All roads leading to the Blue Crown are through the fictional city of Agapenta in the Season 4 finale. The Pogues, the Lupine Corsair mercenaries, and Groff race against each other to climb through the labyrinthine city, where JJ ultimately is the one to grab the Blue Crown from its secret hiding place on top. “The actual set felt like I was filming The Mummy or Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom or something like that,” says Daviss.

Filming location: The region that houses the Blue Crown treasure is known as Agapenta in the series. But it’s really located in Ouarzazate, Morocco, a city that’s known as the “door of the desert” since it’s near the Sahara. “It’s such a big episode, and there was so much we needed to accomplish,” said Stokes. “We initially started with being there for two weeks, and it ended up being six.”
