Hit Man Cast: Glen Powell Brings the True Story of Gary Johnson to Life

Powell stars in and co-wrote the new noir comedy from director Richard Linklater.
    June 21, 2024

Slice yourself a healthy serving of pie and get ready to go undercover. Richard Linklater’s comedy Hit Man is coming to Netflix, and you can see the brand-new trailer above. “Who is your hit man?” the trailer asks. Time to find out.

Co-written by and starring Glen Powell (Set It Up, Top Gun: Maverick), Hit Man belongs to a bundle of genres: noir, screwball comedy, thriller. But at heart, Linklater told Netflix, it’s very simple: “Ultimately, it’s a relationship movie.” The sparks between fake hit man Gary Johnson (Powell) and prospective client Madison (Adria Arjona) fly immediately — until layers upon layers of deceit turn their budding romance upside down.

Read on for your top-secret briefing on the story of Hit Man.

What’s Hit Man about?

Inspired by an unbelievable true story, a straight-laced professor discovers he has a hidden talent as a fake hit man. He meets his match in a client who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.

Gary begins assuming false identities to entrap criminals for the local police, but the situation quickly changes. “I think that’s an attribute of the movie — it’s about a lot of things,” Linklater said. “It’s about identity and self and passion. But on a plot level, it’s just a guy who gets in a little too deep. His passions lead him in a direction where he’s deceiving someone he’s in love with, and being someone else. They have to deal with those repercussions.”

For Powell and Arjona, chemistry came easy. “I met Rick [Linklater] on Zoom first, and then he set it up where I went out and met Glen, and we ended up talking for about four hours,” Arjona told Netflix. “We were both doing Sober January, and an hour into our dinner, we were both cutting loose, drinking tequila, and celebrating the fact that we were going to do this movie together.”

“Sitting down with Adria the first time, it felt like the best first date, but also like I’d known her forever,” Powell added.

Is Hit Man based on a true story?

Yes — although not too closely. The film was inspired by a Texas Monthly story by Skip Hollandsworth; Linklater’s Bernie, starring Jack Black, was also inspired by one of Hollandsworth’s articles. Powell’s character, the now-deceased Gary Johnson, was a real guy who worked as a fake contract killer for the police, but Linklater’s movie makes sure to clarify that its bigger plot twists are completely fictional.

One of the film’s inventions is a running gag that Gary is a master of disguise. “It was Glen who really ran with those false identities that Gary creates for each of his cases,” Linklater says. “The real Gary did slight disguises, but not to the extent that we see in the film. I was like, ‘Should we really do a Russian accent?’ But Glen just pushed all of that to the max, and I love how it came out.”

Linklater says if he needed to hire one of Gary’s alter egos, he’d go with Dean, the unsettling redhead you can spot about 41 seconds into the trailer. “When we’re busted and I put it all on him, the jury might just side with me and give him the bigger sentence,” the cowriter-director tells Tudum. “Seems like a guy that doesn’t belong in society.”

Hit Man also winks at the notion that a hired killer is an easy thing to come by — it’s not, in spite of the profession’s outsized grasp on our cultural imagination. “They don’t exist at the retail level, and they’d be so easy to entrap and arrest,” Linklater says. “Regardless, the average, aware, intelligent person goes through life thinking [hit men] are real … The notion that someone you’ve never met, who’s this icy professional you meet for five minutes, is going to risk the death penalty — I think as a culture we enjoy believing in it.”

Powell puts it even more succinctly: “The fantasy of a hit man occupies a place in our brain because it feels like a simple solution to life’s complicated problems.”

Glen Powell

as Gary Johnson/Ron/Miscellaneous Hit Men
About the Character

Powell plays mild-mannered college professor Gary Johnson — and his devil-may-care hit man alter ego, Ron.

For Powell, writing a screenplay with his longtime collaborator was a lifelong dream. “When I was 14, I worked with Rick for the first time,” Powell said. “And at that point, I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, he’s one of the greats. I’m getting to be on a film set, a Richard Linklater film set.’ And now it’s 20 years later, and I look at Rick the same way. I just pinch myself every day that I get to be here.”

“[Glen] is a great collaborator,” Linklater said about his leading man and co-writer. The two first worked together when Powell was a teen actor in Linklater’s Fast Food Nation; they reunited on Everybody Wants Some!! and Apollo 10 ½ before writing Hit Man together. “It’s kind of like the sports team: If the best guy on the team is also the hardest working, you might win … That’s what Glen is. He wants everybody on the team to be great.”

Adria Arjona

as Madison Figueroa Masters
About the Character

Arjona (Andor, Triple Frontier) plays Madison, who tries to hire Ron and then becomes romantically entangled with him.

Arjona is the key to the romance at the core of the film. “Casting Madison was the crucial moment,” Linklater said. “It had to be someone a guy would risk everything they’ve worked for to be with. And yet, she had to be very sympathetic. Ultimately, what we were asking her to do is just be a real person.”

“Madison’s intentions in this movie are not exactly clear, and that’s one of the reasons why I love her so much,” Arjona said about diving into the role. “There’s an energy about Madison that is kind of contagious, erratic, and spontaneous. I’ve never played a character like that.”

Austin Amelio as Jasper
Brian Roedel/Netflix

Austin Amelio

as Jasper
About the Character

Jasper is the dirty cop whose suspension leads to Gary taking the fake hit man job; upon returning to the force, Jasper quickly becomes suspicious of his replacement.

“Even though Jasper is sort of the bad guy, you’ve always got to find something, a point of view, that will back up the character and justify why he’s doing what he’s doing. You could feel his anger and he was erratic, and the unpredictability of him had me turned on,” Amelio said.

Indeed, Amelio was the only actor considered for the role. “As Rick and I were writing, there was no one we ever talked about or considered for the role of Jasper other than Austin Amelio,” Powell said. “We wrote this character for him. We had both worked with him on Everybody Wants Some!!, and he’s just one of those special actors who are fun to watch thinking and scheming. This character is very tough to play, but he makes it look so effortless.”

Retta as Claudette

Retta

as Claudette
About the Character

Claudette is one of Gary’s police chaperones, the supervisor who’s in his ear on difficult assignments.

“Claudette was really me because it was written as a guy, Claude, and there wasn’t a whole lot to go on,” Retta said. “How do you research detectives? I’ve never even heard of a group of detectives who do sting operations for people trying to do hits on people, so I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”

Retta had history with both Linklater and Powell. She worked with the director on her first pilot, $5.15/Hr., and with Powell on the 2014 comedy Sex Ed. “An interesting fact about Retta is she’s also incredibly well versed in crime stories,” Powell said. “When Rick and I were constructing the through lines for how someone would die or what police would be looking for, Retta was our BS detector. She’d be like, ‘That would never happen. You would discover the body here.’ ”

Sanjay Rao

as Phil
About the Character

Phil is Claudette’s partner, the tech guy in the van who happily swaps pants with Gary when he needs a more realistic hit man disguise.

“Rick’s movies are extremely naturalistic. Coming from a comedy background, I was actually worried that I was going to be too big, making too big of gestures or too big a joke, or hitting things too on the nose for a Linklater film,” Rao said.

But Rao was pleasantly surprised at how things turned out on set. “At the end of our rehearsal period, I remember Rick told me, ‘Bring yourself to it.’ So, for me, it was not so much creating a character, but being myself,” he adds. “But I am still Phil, who moved to New Orleans, got into IT, and then ended up in this odd job with the police force.”
