BA (Hons) Fashion Journalism – University of Sunderland

Sunderland offers the only NCTJ-accredited fashion journalism course in the country, with this course getting 100% for overall satisfaction, academic support and for teaching in the 2021 National Student Survey.

You will learn from experienced journalists with vast experience on national websites, print newspapers and magazines, and major broadcasters. The course leader, Carole Watson, is the former deputy editor of Grazia magazine.

Visiting professors such as The Daily Mirror’s Kevin Maguire and Good Morning Britain editor Neil Thompson, as well as key contacts and graduates including Elle magazine’s head of social media Amy Brewster, will pass on advice and their experience.

You will learn trend forecasting, catwalk reporting, editorial styling, street style photography, podcasting and video journalism alongside core skills such as news and feature writing on issues such as sustainability and diversity in fashion, shorthand and media law.

We offer real-world experience in our MediaHUB newsroom where you will hone your skills on the Fashion North website and social platforms, as well as broadcasting on our award-winning Spark Radio station.

Employability and the latest skills are at the heart of everything we do, and our graduates go on to have successful careers in magazines, social media, working for fashion labels and brands, and even styling celebrities such as Nicole Scherzinger.

NCTJ elective modules offered:

  • Shorthand for journalists
  • Media law court reporting
  • Videojournalism for digital platforms

  • Journalism for a digital audience

Job destinations of recent graduates include:

  • Living North magazine

The combination of media law, ethics and shorthand through NCTJ modules was key in helping me bag a full-time job as a reporter with JPIMedia before I even graduated and I continually use my knowledge (especially shorthand) every single day as a writer for Living North magazine. These skills are vital in becoming a successful journalist.
