Newlyweds on their way to celebrate their honeymoon were killed in a car crash which has left their toddler son an orphan.
Ruben Rodriguez and Juliana Rodriguez-Plata were driving with their son, Daniel, and Juliana's parents Luz Melba Martinez and Carlos Joaquin Plata when a truck heading the opposite way jackknifed. The accident caused the large vehicle to shed its load of 500-pound plastic pipes which crushed the car.
The couple were both killed in the tragedy, as well as the bride’s mother. Mr Plata later told Fox : “I saw when the pipes were going so I just closed my eyes and no reaction, I just felt the impact.
“I woke up out of nowhere and just saw the baby crying and everyone unconscious, not waking up. It was terrible, the accident, the image, all the blood. They were just instantly dead. Seeing my whole family, my daughter and my wife dead."
A gofundme page was launched in the wake of the accident in Colorado, US, which has so far raised $57,000 (£43,000). It reads: “Today has been one of the hardest days we have ever faced. We are heartbroken to share Ruben Rodriguez, Juliana Rodriguez Plata, and Luz Melba Martinez were tragically taken from us in an accident.
“Ruben and Juliana had just begun their beautiful journey together, having celebrated their wedding this past Saturday. They leave behind their precious one-year-old son, Daniel.
“Luz Melba Martinez and Juliana’s father, Carlos, were here from Colombia to celebrate the wedding. Now, Carlos is faced with the unimaginable pain of losing both his daughter and wife in such a short span of time.
“We are reaching out for support to help these families during this incredibly difficult time. Funds will be used to cover funeral costs, support for little Daniel, and any additional expenses that may arise. Your generosity will provide much-needed relief and help ensure that these families can begin to heal and find solace.”
Police said in a statement: “While we understand people want answers, this is an incredibly complicated investigation which will take weeks, not days, to complete.
“We are working in conjunction with our partners at the First Judicial DA's Office of Colorado on potential charges."
