Liam Neeson's son has paid tribute to his late mother by changing his surname.

Micheal, 23, recently officially took mum Natasha Richardson's surname so he could "hold his mother close to him".

Micheal's Oscar-winning grandmother Vanessa Redgrave revealed the news, saying: “He’s taken, officially, the name of his mother.

“He’s Micheal Richardson, not Micheal Neeson.”

Earlier this year, the young actor appeared in an online film series called On Our Way and was credited as Micheal Richardson.

Vanessa added to Waitrose Weekend: “That wasn’t because he wanted to avoid his father’s fame, which is enormous.

“He wanted to hold his mother close to him — because she was a remarkable actress."

The actress, 81, said she doesn't "object" to the young actor changing his name.

“Our quaint customs dictate we have to have a male name. I don’t object,” she said. “Why not? It’s as good as any.”

Irish actor Liam and Natasha married in 1994. As well as Micheal, they also have son Daniel.

Natasha tragically died at the age of 45 in March 2009 after suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in Canada.

The late actress fell while taking a ski lesson on a beginners’ slope at the Mont Tremblant resort in Quebec.

She had not been wearing a helmet and initially shrugged off her tumble, appearing to be fine and able to talk and act normally.

Paramedics and an ambulance which initially responded to the accident were told they were not needed and left.

Refusing medical attention twice, she returned to her hotel room but about three hours later was taken to a local hospital in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts after complaining of a headache.

She was transferred by ambulance in a critical condition to Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur in Montreal and was admitted about seven hours after the fall. A day later she was flown to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, where she died on March 18.

The New York City medical examiner’s office said she had suffered a blunt trauma to the head, causing massive internal bleeding in the brain.
