BALTIMORE, MD — August 2024: The Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance (BAWA) is thrilled to announce the return of the “Maryland 3,000” adoption challenge. For the month of August, adoption fees will be waived for animals at participating animal shelters across the state. Shelters in every county of Maryland are involved.

Though fees are waived, all regular adoption procedures still apply. Interested adopters should check with their local shelter to see what is included with the adoption of their new pet.

“Our goal is to save the lives of adoptable animals by placing 3,000—or more—in loving homes,” said Bailey Deacon, Director of Philanthropy and Communications at BARCS Animal Shelter, a founding member of BAWA. “If you’ve ever thought about opening your home to a new furry family member, now is the time! Big or small, active or quiet, the participating Maryland shelters are sure to have the perfect match for your family.”

BAWA started this event more than a decade ago and it was so successful that it has continued to expand year after year. While it has not happened since 2019, all of the participating shelters are excited for its return. ###

About the Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance (BAWA) The Maryland 3,000 is presented by the Baltimore Animal Welfare Alliance (BAWA). In order to better serve the animals and people of the Baltimore community, the major animal welfare organizations in Baltimore—Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS), Baltimore County Animal Services, Baltimore Humane Society and the Maryland SPCA, came together to form BAWA in 2008. The founding organizations work together to save animals’ lives. Joint efforts include adoption events, spaying and neutering animals, and transporting animals in need from one shelter to another so that fewer pets are euthanized.
