4 Key Layering Pieces I’m Relying on This Fall and Winter
From snug shackets to tissue turtlenecks.
Even though it was 80 degrees in New York City last weekend, I’m ready to discuss layering. Consider it wishful thinking for the weather to finally break and usher in a nice fall breeze. This is my favorite season for dressing (and honestly, when my personal style really shines) and that’s thanks to these four wardrobe staples I like to trot out once the temperatures drop.
Swackets and Shackets
Made-up words, but you know them when you see them: Sweaters and shirts that can kind of function like jackets, depending on what you style them with. (Think T-shirts, button downs, thin turtlenecks, maybe even another thin cardigan!) These are especially great for those 45 degree to 65 degree days.
Knee-High Boots
I’ve only recently started shopping for more knee-high boots, an expected side-effect of incorporating more skirts into my wardrobe. I found that, especially if worn with knee-high socks (which we discuss in Marie Claire) or with thicker tights, they can be just as warm as jeans—if not warmer.
Midi Skirts
As I mentioned above, this season I plan on incorporating longer skirts into my work wardrobe as an alternative to denim and trousers. Sara Holzman, Marie Claire’s style director, pretty much never wears jeans (she wrote about her anti-denim philosophy last week) and serves as an inspiration. If you hate pants, join me on this journey.
Tissue Turtlenecks
The J.Crew style first came on my radar years ago and I’ve returned to it season after season. But it isn’t the only brand that makes this layering workhorse. Any option works, so long as it’s thin enough to wear under chunkier knit sweaters or blazers.
