We recently completed an assessment, working with the Nevada Association of Counties, on the state of Nevada’s public health infrastructure. While the findings say that our system is fragile and at risk, the report offers tangible opportunities to improve public health in each of the 13 areas the assessment explored. Myth: Canadian Geese Cannot be Deterred Easily and Damage Landscape Fact: While Canadian geese can significantly affect landscapes by overgrazing lawns, parks, and crops, leading to bare soil and erosion, Integrated Pest Management Strategies for safe management of geese can help! Habitat Modification: Reduce access to food and nesting sites by using dense shrubbery or fencing near water bodies and feeding grounds. Exclusion Techniques: Install reflective tape, low flagging, or fencing to keep geese away from sensitive areas. Repellents and Decoys: Use decoys such as coyote models, motion-activated sprinklers, or natural repellents. Rotate and reposition these regularly to maintain effectiveness. These methods balance ecological needs while minimizing the negative effects of geese on landscapes. IPM What Is It Wednesday: Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) are iconic residents of Nevada, found in diverse habitats across the state. These deer are easily identified by their large, mule-like ears and black-tipped tails. In winter, they often migrate to lower elevations where food is more accessible. Some easy deterrence tips: Protect plants: Use fencing or netting to shield gardens and ornamental plants. Plant selection: Choose deer-resistant plants like barberry, lavender, or juniper. Scents and repellents: Apply natural scent deterrents around your yard. Limit food access: Remove fallen fruits and secure compost to discourage wildlife visits. Mule deer rely on water sources, so managing water availability around homes can also impact their presence. Proper landscape planning can help us coexist with mule deer while minimizing conflicts. To support local grape growers, Associate Professor & Extension Specialist Most Tahera Naznin is studying the growth, quality and production of commercial Riesling grapes in microclimates across Nevada. Her findings will help farmers adapt their growing practices to a changing world. “This is a really big industry," she said. "So how can we create our quality production more sustainably? How can we use the minimal amount of resources, including water, to produce more food?” Find out in this Edible Reno-Tahoe magazine story: https://lnkd.in/g6GVdY3q. #UNRCABNR | #UNRExtension | #UNRExperimentStation | #AgriculturalScience | #ResearchWorksForNevada | University of Nevada, Reno | College of Agriculture, Biotechnology & Natural Resources at University of Nevada, Reno

Fiber is critical for good health. To help, Assistant Professor & Extension Specialist Angeline Jeyakumar developed 25 recipes that each provide 7-8 grams of fiber. She said, "Our goal was to ensure that, even with limited resources, people could still make nutritious choices." So, the recipes use foods distributed by food pantries. How can you beat the winter blues? "As summer gives way to fall and winter, many healthy people may start to feel more tired, foggy headed, have trouble sleeping or experience body aches," Extension Specialist Angeline Jeyakumar said. "These symptoms are often connected to seasonal affective disorder (SAD), which can result from getting less sunlight and a drop in vitamin D absorption." Want to lift your mood? "While certain foods can give you a vitamin D boost, nothing beats sunlight for raising your levels naturally," Angeline said. "For dietary sources, think delicious options such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, mushrooms and egg yolks. Fortified cereals, juices and dairy products can help too, but watch out for processed options that might be high in sugar or fat."
