Yolanda LOBAO, a partner in the Barcelona office of our strategic alliance firm ECIJA, has provided an update on Spain's move to eliminate its Golden Visa and authorisations of residency for foreign investors. According to the suggested legislation, not only will visas and authorisations of residency due to the acquisition of real estate be eliminated, but also visas and authorisations of residency for investing in Spanish public debt, shares of companies, investment funds, bank deposits and entrepreneurial projects. The new law still needs to be ratified by the Senate and, afterwards, once it is published in the State Official Gazette, there will be a period of three months before it enters into force, which is likely to happen in February/March 2025.
