Last week, we celebrated the ribbon-cutting ceremony for our new Speech-Language Center. The enthusiasm from attendees was palpable as we officially recognized the crucial services the Speech-Language Center provides to our community, bridging gaps in access to speech and language support. The night continued with the Local Leaders, Global Impact panel, "Inclusive Voices: Examining Race, Neurodiversity, and the Importance of Early Intervention," featuring Carrie Hinnant, M.A., CCC-SLP, BCBA, LBA, CAS, Rachel M Dean MPH, RDN, LDN, IBCLC, RLC, Jane Carlson, PhD, BCBA-D, and Brandy Jernigan, SLPD-CCC. The discussion brought together these experts in speech-language pathology, lactation, and applied behavior analysis. They engaged in a thought-provoking conversation about inequities in critical services for minority and neurodiverse communities, exploring barriers to access and potential solutions. We were proud to display the work of the talented Jamea Marlowe. Jamea’s body of work titled “Educations Not Equal" (2023), touches on the many struggles that black and brown children in underserved areas face throughout their adolescence. We connected with Jamea through our partnership with Ricky Singh and My Brother's Keeper Charlotte-Mecklenburg, an organization doing laudable work to address inequities faced by boys and young men of color in Charlotte. Our partnership allows us to achieve shared goals through the Speech-Language Center. We're excited about the impact of our Speech-Language Center and the continued discussions on inclusive healthcare and education on our campus. Thank you to all who participated and supported this important initiative! And congratulations to Nia I Johnson EdD, CCC-SLP, Toya Foggie, Emily Zimmerman, Trenton Honda, Justin G. Roy, Sarah Young Hong, the Northeastern University, Bouvé College of Health Sciences faculty, staff, and administrators, our partners, and our campus faculty and staff for the hard work and dedication they have put in to open the Center! #nuCLT #SpeechLanguageCenter #CommunityImpact #NortheasternUniversity
