We will have a new home at Green Hall at the beginning of the spring semester ☀️ It's a renovated space designed to make student support services accessible, including two classrooms! “This really has been developed with a student-first approach,” said Michelle Carney, dean of the School of Social Welfare. “In every area, we were asking, ‘What’s best for our students?’ How do we create a space that works for group work, conversations, and all the things we do in social work?” Learn more about the Green Hall space here: https://bit.ly/3BDzOHh

A Foundation of Strengths. A Vision of Justice. A Mission of Change
About us
The University of Kansas School of Social Welfare, rooted in the Strengths Perspective, aims to transform lives and social contexts and promote social, economic, and environmental justice in Kansas, the nation and the world. We do so by educating students to practice with integrity and competence; advancing the science and knowledge base of social work through scholarship and research; and participating in community-engaged service. KU School of Social Welfare offers the only comprehensive program in social work in Kansas, with professional degrees at the undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels: Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Master of Social Work (MSW), Doctor of Social Work (DSW) and Doctorate of Philosophy in Social Work (PhD). The school also offers the complete MSW program in five locations around the state: Lawrence Campus; KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park; Pittsburg State University campus in Pittsburg; K-State Salina campus in Salina; and online through Jayhawk Global. The BSW program is offered on the Lawrence Campus and for transfer students on the KU Edwards Campus in Overland Park. The PhD program is offered on the Lawrence Campus only. The DSW program, launched in 2023, is a fully online program. Social work education began at KU in 1937. The Master of Social Work program, established in Lawrence and at the KU Medical Center in Kansas City in 1946, has been continuously accredited since 1948. The Bachelor of Social Work degree has been awarded since 1971. In 1974, the BSW program became one of the first in the nation to receive accredited status. The doctoral program admitted its first students in 1981. The school is housed on the University of Kansas Lawrence campus in Twente Hall.

School of Social Welfare adjunct faculty member Dr. Amittia Parker was recently honored at the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in Kansas City for her article, “Black Social Workers Matter: Using Parallel Narratives to Discuss Social Work History.” “I actually started writing this paper in my first class in the KU doctoral history and philosophy class taught in 2016 at the time by Dr. Margaret Severson,” Dr. Parker said. “Her feedback and encouragement as well as the support of my mentor Dr. Nancy Jo Kepple to continue refining my good ideas was critical in my process to publish this piece.” Congrats, Amittia!
