Solving #livestock #methane requires policy #innovation. Many have heard about the recent plan to use a taxation approach in Denmark. I learned a lot about this approach at #COP29 with the Danish Agriculture and Food Council and my recent letter to the editor in the The New York Times highlights how #farmers are really key to a successful methane policy. In it's new plans to lower methane emissions from livestock, the Danish government got some important points right: First, it recognized that food emissions require unique solutions. Then, it centered farmers in the policy development process, incentivized action and allowed farmers time to adjust. This inclusive approach to involving farmers in creating climate policies is something other countries should follow as they craft policies that make sense for their own ag sectors. https://lnkd.in/eaYuByj5

The food & agriculture sector is on the frontlines of our climate crisis, with extreme weather driving $21 billion in U.S. crop losses in 2023 alone. 🌪️🌾 As public funding for climate-smart agriculture faces potential rollbacks, private sector leadership is more important than ever. Our new report, “Funding the Future: Evaluating public & private investments in climate-smart row crop agriculture,” uncovers key gaps—and opportunities—for the food and ag industry to scale meaningful climate action while building supply chain resilience. Read the report here: https://www.edf.org/Z6a9 What We Found: 💸 A massive funding gap in the global agriculture sector’s climate transition, with current investment levels far below the $200B-$1.2T needed annually. 🌾 In U.S. row crops, overinvestment in practices like cover cropping and no-till, which must complement—rather than replace—critical reductions in CO2 from on-farm fossil fuel use and nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer. ✅ Untapped opportunities for companies to partner with farmers, join the electrification future and build the business case for sustainable agriculture. The time to act is now. Scaling private sector investment in climate-smart solutions will not only address #GHG emissions but also mitigate supply chain risks and secure farmer livelihoods. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ResilientFoodSystems

How can the insurance industry support climate-friendly rebuilding after natural disasters? 🏠 🌎 Our latest blog from Tallant Burley and Carolyn Kousky explores how the insurance industry can do more than replace what’s lost; with policies with climate endorsements, insurers can help homeowners rebuild greener and stronger after natural disasters — helping to protect the places you care about most. Insurance policies with climate endorsements can provide additional funding for energy-efficient and climate resilient upgrades during reconstruction. While climate endorsements come with many potential benefits, challenges remain — such as technical support — to make them more widely available to homeowners. The good news is solutions exist. 💡 Keep reading here: https://lnkd.in/ejJt7fAg

Two things are happening this holiday shopping season: 1. Record levels of spending, often leading to a rise in holiday package deliveries. 🚚 📦 2. Growing interest from consumers in sustainability. 🌱 One transport company is winning over customers and proving that decoupling CO₂ emissions from financial growth is possible: Girteka Group. Our team sat down with Viktorija Terekė, Head of Sustainability, Girteka to discuss the sustainability advances they are making through fleet electrification, eco-driving courses for drivers and intermodal rail systems with electric propulsion. Our full conversation is now available in a new Q&A blog here: https://www.edf.org/Z6aA Girteka’s ambitious progress is part of a broader trend: the European Union’s economy is 66% larger than in 1990 📈, but emissions are down by almost 40% 📉. The EU’s journey towards #netzero is showing how companies can reduce their emissions while operating successful and profitable businesses.💸
