C&EN Media Group was proud to sponsor the SAMPS - Sales And Marketing Professionals in Science Conference in San Francisco earlier this month! Kicking off the event, Kierra Tobiere, MA and Heather Lockhart-Neff hosted a networking happy hour, providing a fantastic opportunity to connect with our science marketing community. This one-day, 10-session conference was packed with insights on innovation in Life Science Sales & Marketing. Here are a few key takeaways: 🪴 Hamid Ghanadan, CEO of LINUS, opened the day with a powerful keynote on how organizational growth is driven by innovation. In science organizations, groundbreaking research is often seen as the biggest catalyst of innovation. However, marketing, human resources, IT teams, and others all play crucial roles in how your organization innovates. Science marketing companies need to drive this innovation, too. 🎤 Chris Conner, founder of Life Science Marketing Radio and long-time collaborator with C&EN BrandLab, delved into how company culture can help tell your organization's story and connect with your audience. Consider how you can showcase your company’s culture via content on Linkedin, email campaigns, and blog posts. 📈 Jenn Perkins, Founder + CEO of Crevi, shared innovative strategies for a profitable growth era. Jenn's advice? Flip the script and start with your current clients. For those in sales or tangential roles, identify your most profitable partnerships. What topics and themes can you see? How can you find similar clients? Thank you to #SAMPS for an incredible day filled with meaningful connections and invaluable knowledge sharing! How do you encourage innovation on your team? Let us know in the comments! #ScienceCommunication #SciComm #ScienceMarketing

I remember when the first mRNA vaccines rolled out a few years ago—I was struck by the simplicity of the idea itself. What I didn’t appreciate at the time was the amount of: 1. The effort and roadblocks the technology faced over decades of R&D 2. How hard it is to make the lipids required to protect and deliver the mRNA cargo The second is the topic of my first completed project with BrandLab and Curia. It digs into the difficulties of synthesizing and purify lipids at the massive scales needed for global vaccine campaigns. A big thanks to Kyle Proffitt for your writing and research on this one! There are MANY ways to package science content—white papers, eBooks, application notes, blogs, social media posts, and more! It can be overwhelming, but it is crucial to know how to tailor content for different stages of your marketing funnel. Our scientist-turned-marketer, Jesse Harris, MASc, MSc from C&EN BrandLab, shares his insights on when and how to use these content types in your science marketing strategy on our Marketing Elements blog. Here are a few highlights: 📄 White Papers: Ideal for top- or middle-of-funnel content. Use them for thought leadership, best practices, or problem-solving without being overly promotional. 📚 eBooks: Think of them as multi-chapter white papers with more visuals. Great for top-of-funnel awareness. See the blog post for a great example from the United Soy Board’s campaign on soy-based chemical feedstocks. 📝 Application Notes: Perfect for lower-funnel content. Highlight specific use cases or compare products, but remember they require significant input from subject matter experts. 📜 Academic Articles: High-impact but resource-intensive. Publish if you have groundbreaking data or results to share, boosting credibility and attracting researchers. Each format serves a unique purpose in your content strategy. Choose wisely to engage your audience effectively! So you landed the big sales pitch meeting – now what? Crafting the perfect sales pitch for B2B science clients can be particularly challenging considering these audiences tend to be curious and skeptical buyers who have done their own research. So how can you stand out from the crowd and land their business? Here are some key takeaways from our latest blog: 🔍 Do Your Homework: 81% of sales reps say buyers pre-research potential partners. For science B2B clients, this figure is likely even higher. Ensure your pitch is well-researched and tailored to their industry, company, and pain points. Go further and research the individuals who play a role in the buying decision-making. 🎯 Personalize Your Pitch: Only 9% of buyers feel messages are personalized. Align your messaging with the customer’s needs to position yourself as a true partner committed to their success rather than just another vendor peddling products or services. 📖 Tell a Humanized Story: When pitching to scientists, focusing on facts and figures is tempting. However, storytelling is powerful. Share real-life customer stories to show how your product solves real-world problems. Use testimonials and case studies to build credibility and connect emotionally. If unavailable, create relatable scenarios demonstrating how your solution fits their daily challenges.
