A Developer’s Journey - Choice and Challenges Between Golang Vs. Rust During the rebuild of our chatting services, we encountered performance issues with user registration, mainly due to the scrypt function. While the production servers were more resilient to the load than the development servers, registration was still slower than expectations. To improve performance, we decided to move scrypting to a dedicated server, which sparked a debate between Go and Rust. Go offered better consistency and readability with our existing infrastructure, but Rust excelled at both speeding up and saving memory. We initially implemented Go, but persistent memory problems led us to rewrite the scrypt server in Rust, which eventually solved the problem. This journey underlined the importance of choosing the right tool for the job. The balance between performance and long term maintainability is important. At BACKND, we see these experiences as part of our ongoing journey to build better and better products. We are committed to learning from these challenges and working to improve our solutions going forward.
