About us
The nonpartisan Arizona Center for Civic Leadership at the Flinn Foundation enhances civic life in Arizona through civic education, engagement, and leadership-development programs. • The Center’s cornerstone, the prestigious Flinn-Brown Fellowship, is an immersive experience for community leaders from diverse backgrounds. Fellows engage in rich discussions with policymakers and political experts; join a robust professional network; and gain understanding of how to address Arizona’s most pressing issues through public service. • The Civic Leadership Collaborative and the Arizona Civic Life Partnership convene organizations that strengthen civic participation and connected communities. • CivEx delivers educational programming for the public to become better-informed on Arizona policy and political topics. • Flinn Young Leaders emphasizes civic learning and skill-building and helps teens imagine paths to making a difference. The Center, which has provided nonpartisan, independent programming since 2011, views civic leadership as requiring clear vision, deep knowledge, hard work, and a willingness to bridge differences to build consensus on solutions that advance our state. The Flinn Foundation administers all programs of the Arizona Center for Civic Leadership. The Thomas R. Brown Foundations of Tucson partners with Flinn to support the Flinn-Brown Fellowship.

"I think a great opportunity [for Arizona] would be providing citizens the opportunity for something like Flinn-Brown. We have such a diverse population now that if we could find ways to bring people together that have different opinions, different perspectives…Solving problems would get so much easier." As a 2017 #FlinnBrown Fellow and lifelong Arizonan, Elizabeth Alvarado-Thorson has always been passionate about giving back to her home state. Now, as the Director of the Arizona Department of Administration, she’s leading with purpose, responsibility, and a vision of bringing people together. In partnership with the Arizona Governor's Office of Youth, Faith and Family (GOYFF), and the non-profit Amplify Voices, the Center recently hosted a CivEx workshop featuring a screening of The Journey, a compelling documentary following three survivors of human trafficking and sexual assault. This powerful film highlights their courageous journey through Amplify Voices’ transformative 90-day program, culminating in a meaningful storytelling experience. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Director Tonya Hamilton and Maria Cristina Fuentes for spotlighting GOYFF’s impactful work and the Governor’s Council to Combat Human Trafficking in Arizona. Our gratitude also goes to panelists Deborah Shapiro, Amanda Schneider, and Dominique Roe-Sepowitz for leading thought-provoking discussions that shed light on these critical issues. Last Thursday, Fellows got to tour the Arizona Department of Public Safety Crime Lab! Learning about DPS's firearm examination, DNA testing, and latent fingerprinting was a fascinatingly unique experience. Of course, a huge thank you to #FlinnBrown Fellow Jesse Galvez for organizing this Fellows Field Trip and giving us the opportunity to peek behind the DPS curtain.
