Is your team's growth limited by their tasks?

Is your team's growth limited by their tasks?

Hey folks,

I was looking at my list of tasks yesterday and wondered whether other organizations have the freedom to decide on their tasks.

We are a small team, and our business situation demands creativity and frequent changes in our work. What about the mid and large teams?

Seems like people want more learning opportunities. This was the third-most desired individual growth need in a wide-scale research.

The evolving business environment was literally one of the main reasons we adopted OKRs. We tried KRAs and KPIs but lacked resonating vision, flexibility, and simplicity.

When we compared the more advanced goal-setting frameworks like OKRs to traditional KPIs, it was clear that we had to use the former.

Add more flexibility and motivation to work using a framework

Here are some steps/tips to enable your people to work with flexible goals and tasks.

1. Let the Person Align with the Business Share business vision and high-level objectives clearly so people can align their goals and actions. This also ensures "work" in the right direction.

2. Train Them to Write Purposeful Goals Make people's daily tasks more meaningful. Help them set business-aligned goals that also resonate with their values and aspirations.

3. Let People Experiment & Optimize Work Support them in taking calculated risks, creative problem-solving, and adjusting tasks (or even goals) based on the changing environment.

4. Create Milestones to Ensure Progress Train people to break OKRs into smaller actionable milestones. This makes progress more realistic, achievable, and measurable.

5. Establish Routine Check-Ins on Progress Consider these regular meetings as a safe space to discuss challenges towards goals openly, realign efforts and offer support.

6. Encourage Leaders to Propagate This Culture Equip team leaders and influencers with the skills to advocate for the OKR framework and flexible execution within their teams.

Now, this is a big task. A simple framework (OKRs) alone won’t bring the change. You have to start small (maybe run a pilot).

If you need help, our experts help leaders ease the buy-in of the team and train them progressively on the framework.
