YOU DON’T NEED A CRAZY NAME TO BE FAMOUS/THOUGHTS BY THOMAS SOWELL

1)  People can garner attention from their accomplishments or deliberate attempts to gain attention.

WISDOM NUGGET: You can either accomplish or seem to accomplish, it’s easier in the short term to “seem” to accomplish than it is to actual accomplish a goal. Look up: Esse Quam Videri in Latin.

2)  Today almost everywhere you look people seem to put a lot of effort into seeking attention. Examples:  Wild hairdos, Huge Tattoos, Pierced Body Parts, Outlandish Statements. . .

WISDOM NUGGET: All these attention seeking efforts have become a substitute for achievements.

3) Some parents give children off the wall names, as if that is the way to give the child individuality.

WISDOM NUGGET: You don’t need a crazy name to become an individual to become famous. Can you think of more plain names than JIM BROWN, TED WILLIAMS, WALTER JOHNSON, AND MICHAEL JORDAN? It was not their name that made them famous IT WAS WHAT THEY DID that made their names famous!

4) In business some of the biggest economic changes were accomplished by plain old Henry Ford, Bill Gates, Richard Sears, and Sam Walton.

WISDOM NUGGET: Gimmicks are not a prerequisite for accomplishment in business.

5) No gimmicks for success, especially in sports.

WISDOM NUGGET: Joe Lewis wore the same standard boxing trunks as everyone else, he didn’t denigrate his opponents or behave like a lout inside or outside the ring. But Joe Lewis scored more first round knockouts in championship fights than any other heavy weight and will be remembered as long as boxing is remembered.

6)  The more fundamental problem more than attention seekers is that broader society rewards such nonsensical behavior by garnering attention.

WISDOM NUGGET: One of the most painful signs of the times: The media attention paid to Paris Hilton (yes, the subject is dated, but substitute the latest celebrity/influencer here) vastly outweighed the attention paid toward Iran’s movement toward nuclear weapons, an event that significantly changed the course of history.

7)  In a non-judgmental world what is the criteria to determine who deserves attention?

WISDOM NUGGET: We reward the nonsensical behavior with our attention. How many scientists, industrialists, inventors etc. those who’ve raised the quality of life and standard of living for the world, garner as much attention as the latest celebrity willing to strut around like a bimbo?!

8)  Sound Judgement does not exist in a nonjudgmental society.

WISDOM NUGGET: The problem is not that people do things to garner attention, the problem is that society at large no longer has standards of which to deny or rebuke attention seekers who have nothing to contribute to society. DO NOT EXPECT SOUND JUDGMENTS IN A SOCIETY WHEN BEING NONJUDGMENTAL IS AN EXAULTED VALUE. REMEMBER: IF YOU DO NOT STAND FOR SOMETHING YOU WILL FALL FOR ANYTHING.

It is my hope that this adds value to your day/week. Please share any thoughts you have on the subject. As always #CausaSui

Love it , too bad society is so removed from reality.

So true. My acting teacher wisely pointed out that you have only so much creative emotional energy to give. Partying too much, performing socially (rather than professionally) and trying to inject false excitement into your life burn you out creatively and emotionally. He pointed to De Niro, Redford, Hoffman, Pachino, Streyp, Struthers, Hanks, Washington, Poitier and our own Sandra Bullock as examples of actors who were able to have long creative careers with relatively calm personal lives. Sure almost all of them had a tabloid story or two but nothing compared to the Ezra Millers, Johnny Depps and Lindsey Lohan’s of the world.
