Why Virtual Events Are The Secret To Building Thriving Communities
When it comes to community building, I love to start with virtual events.
Why?
Because virtual events are a fantastic way to experiment. They allow you to put your community-building ideas to the test before you commit to semi-permanent digital structures, like a Facebook group, Slack channel, or proprietary online group.
Virtual events are a fantastic way to see if (and how) people will connect to form a community in a low-stakes environment: They don't require a ton of money; they can be pulled off with a small investment of time; and if they fail horribly, they end and you can move on to the next thing.
That's why I always encourage new community builders to test their ideas with a series of virtual events.
In fact, I've been working on several virtual event series as well.
For the past several months, in conjunction with Paragon, I've hosted the Beyond the Broadcast virtual event series for public media broadcasters.
And after Thanksgiving, I am teaming up with Joel Denver of All Access to host Radio Rendezvous, a virtual networking event for professional radio broadcasters.
I host these events on a platform called Remo, which I discovered during the pandemic. I love Remo precisely because it enables attendees to connect with one another, laying the groundwork for a thriving community.
In fact, I also host a series of virtual events for Remo virtual event producers. (How lowercase-M meta!)
If you're looking to dip your toe in the community-building pool, virtual events are fantastic way to start. And if you're interested in trying out the Remo platform, I've put together a video that shows you how to set up your first Remo event.
Finally, because Thanksgiving is coming up this week in the U.S., let me take a moment to be thankful for virtual events. As somebody who has worked remotely since the pandemic struck four years ago, I often miss the social bustle that comes with working in an office. And while there's no substitute for in-person interaction, these events have helped me connect with people in way that you just don't get with Zoom calls. I am thankful for that.
If you are a fit for one of the virtual events I mentioned above, please join us for our next gathering. We'd love to have you!
Absolutely agree, Seth! Community building is the cornerstone of all great organizations, and many teams require innovative ways to do this online! Thanks for sharing :)
