Why Am I Here?
Turning half a century old this September brought me to a state of deep reflection. The milestone deepened my awareness of life’s most pressing question: “Why am I here?” This year, the weight of keeping my family close and happy, navigating the complexities of raising teenagers, and staying relevant in a fierce business landscape pushed me to my limits. Balancing these responsibilities amidst competition and rapid technological change has been one of the greatest tests of my resilience.
As 2024 draws to a close, I see this challenging year not just as a test, but as a transformative chapter. Each trial—whether within the home, in personal growth, or professionally—has reshaped my perspective, teaching me the value of perseverance and clarity. It’s been a journey of purpose and self-discovery, reminding me that even in the most demanding moments, there is room to grow and find meaning.
Keeping the Family Together
Family life is never without its challenges, but 2024 seemed to magnify them, be it from physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. My teenagers, navigating their own paths, brought a whirlwind of emotions into our home. Balancing their needs with my own responsibilities often felt like walking a tightrope. There were days I questioned if I was doing enough or being present enough for them or have I made a mistake by parenting the way I did. Holding the family together amidst these struggles required immense patience, love, and countless late-night conversations with my best friend and spouse to bridge the gaps of misunderstanding and, sometimes, heartaches and disappointments.
Growing Pains and Growing Faith
Amidst the chaos, my faith wavered. The question, “Why am I here?” lingered heavily in my mind. The pressure of juggling everything—family, career, and personal aspirations—often left me drained. It felt like I was moving forward without direction, and I questioned whether all the sacrifices and sleepless nights were even worth it.
Yet, in those moments of despair, I held onto my faith like a lifeline. There were times I stumbled, and totally broken, but somehow, grace always found me. Through prayers, quiet moments of reflection, and unwavering support from loved ones, I kept going.
Staying Sane in a Competitive World
Professionally, 2024 was no easier. The landscape of my industry shifted rapidly with new technological developments and increased competition. Keeping up felt like an endless race with no finish line. There were times when I doubted my abilities and wondered if I could still make an impact in a world that seemed to evolve faster than I could adapt.
Every failure, every misstep, felt like a sign to give up. But instead of succumbing to defeat, I chose to view these moments as opportunities to learn and grow. It wasn’t easy, but I realized that persistence and adaptability are the keys to staying afloat.
Investing in Growth and Learning
One of the most important lessons I learned this year was the value of investing in myself. I had to set aside money for continued learning and coaching to gain clarity and receive guidance on how to move forward. This investment was not just financial—it required time, effort, and an openness to change. But it was worth it. I ensured I put what I learned into actions immediately as I had no time to waste. From those experiences and returns, I knew all I needed was someone to just give me a nudge and say, u can do this! These resources helped me see new possibilities, sharpen my skills, and find direction in moments when I felt lost and for that, I am so grateful.
Finding the Answer
Being an entrepreneur is no walk in the park, and I knew of the pains when I decided to take the leap five years ago. But this year, it seemed like it was calling me to QUIT! However, just when I was ready to throw in the towel, questioning everything I had worked for, God gave me an answer that reshaped my perspective. I found clarity through my work with incredible organizations like APKIM for their International Mental Health Conference and mental health counsellors advocating for early intervention. These collaborations reminded me of my passion for advocating for mental health and early childhood education.
I realized that this—working to uplift communities, champion important causes, and support others through meaningful initiatives—is what I do best. It’s what I’ve been called to do. This is my purpose.
Lessons in Parenting and Relationships
As a parent, I’ve learned the art of listening first and keeping my anger at bay before reacting—even in moments when frustration threatened to overwhelm me. This year taught me that understanding and patience go a long way in building trust and fostering open communication with my teenagers. And talk about forgiveness. It comes both ways. Between you and your child, both ways. The question is, how many of us are willing to say I am sorry first? This year, that opened a new beginning to a new relationship with my children.
In friendships, I’ve come to realize that not all relationships are meant to last forever. Some friends are meant to remain close, while others are better kept as contacts. Unfortunately, I’ve also learned that some individuals can take advantage of kindness and generosity, including those you consider as friends. It also means learning to let go, and that my friendship, love, care and attention are for those who are only deserves it.This realization has taught me to set boundaries and prioritize relationships that are mutually respectful and supportive.
Moving Forward With Clarity
2024 was tough, no doubt about it. But it also brought me the greatest clarity I’ve ever had. It taught me that challenges are not meant to defeat us but to refine us. My journey this year has reaffirmed that my calling lies in serving others—whether through advocacy, education, or creating safe spaces for important conversations.
As I step into 2025, I carry these lessons with me. I am more determined than ever to embrace my purpose, nurture my family, and continue making an impact. To anyone else questioning their why, hold on. Keep Allah close to you all the time and continue to seek guidance. Sometimes, the answer comes when you least expect it, but when it does, it will illuminate everything.
Here’s to moving forward with hope, faith, and clarity. Bismillah.
