What’s Next for AI App Ecosystems?

With over 13 years of experience in the center of the smartphone ecosystem, I’ve witnessed how new devices can define entire markets, transforming user interaction and setting the stage for lasting ecosystems. Today, as we enter the AI app era, a pivotal factor often overlooked is the impact new AI devices will have in driving adoption, creating novel interfaces, and ultimately reshaping market expectations.

New AI Devices: Revolutionizing Interfaces and Shaping Markets Just as the smartphone unlocked new app behaviors, AI-specific devices have the potential to redefine how users experience and engage with applications. These devices are ushering in new ways of interaction, such as hands-free AI voice interfaces, real-time image generation, and multimodal AI applications that could fundamentally shift user expectations. This isn’t about individual apps anymore—it’s about a connected AI ecosystem that makes AI interaction seamless and essential across sectors.

1st Wave of AI Apps: Early Leaders and Market Evolution I’ve had the chance to engage with some first-wave leaders, like ElevenLabs, which recently crossed $90M ARR (up 260% YoY, per Sacra estimates), and other big stars like Midjourney. These companies are moving beyond foundation models to user-driven applications, a shift that is starting to generate significant revenue. But even for these pioneers, the success of AI apps will hinge on the devices that carry them forward and how they integrate into everyday use.

Market Maturity Pattern:

  1. Key Inflection Points: THEN (Smartphone Era):

  • The arrival of the smartphone and app stores drove new revenue models and transformed consumer habits

  • Privacy and regulatory frameworks evolved to meet growing data demands

NOW (AI App Era):

  • Device-Centric AI Experiences: New AI-specific devices will lead to innovative interaction methods and drive AI adoption in high-stakes industries, especially in regulated sectors like healthcare and fintech

  • Evolving User Interfaces: Hands-free, voice-driven, and visual interfaces will expand user interaction possibilities and shape app expectations

  • Seamless Cross-Device Intelligence: AI applications must integrate fluidly across devices, creating a cohesive user experience that feels essential to daily life

2. Challenges & Opportunities for Sustainable Growth:

Avoiding Early Hype and Maintaining Momentum: As with Web 3.0, early hype can lead to cooling periods, making it critical to build sustainable infrastructure and real user value

The Role of Regulation in High-Impact Sectors: Data privacy and compliance will be non-negotiable in sectors like healthcare and finance, where trust is paramount Infrastructure

Readiness for Multi-Modal AI: With new devices introducing voice, vision, and touch-driven AI, infrastructure needs to adapt to support an immersive, multi-sensory experience

Healthcare & Fintech: Redefining AI-Driven User Experiences

New AI devices can enable innovative applications in healthcare and finance, such as real-time health diagnostics, personalized financial guidance, and other services that require deep trust and privacy. These sectors are primed for transformation, but only if the supporting AI apps and devices meet high standards of security, compliance, and user-centric design.

Key Questions to Watch for 2024:

  • Will the emerging AI devices reshape user behavior as dramatically as smartphones once did?

  • Which early AI app leaders like ElevenLabs and Midjourney will successfully adapt to this evolving device-driven ecosystem?

  • Are companies and regulators prepared for the demands of an AI-first device market?

The next phase for AI apps is about more than just apps—it’s about creating an interconnected AI device ecosystem that redefines interaction, trust, and user engagement in high-impact sectors.
