What I Wish I Knew About Internships When I Was a Student / Fresher

Did you know your first internship could make or break your career?

I didn’t. Not at first. 😅

When I was a student, internships seemed like this vague, scary thing everyone talked about. "You HAVE to get one," they said.

But no one told me how. Or why.

Now that I’ve been on both sides, as an intern and a professional, I realize internships are important for skills, connections, and confidence.

If only I had known these things earlier... 👇

1️⃣ It’s Not About Fancy Brands, It’s About the Work

  • I thought working at a big-name company was all that mattered.

  • Reality? A smaller company might teach you way more because you’ll wear multiple hats.

Note: Choose internships where you’ll actually learn, not just fetch coffee.

2️⃣ Networking Is More Important Than the Job

  • Internships are the best time to build relationships.

  • One kind manager or a helpful colleague can open doors years down the road.

Note: Stay connected on LinkedIn with people you meet during your internship.

3️⃣ Your First Drafts Will Always Be Terrible, That’s Okay!

  • I was scared to make mistakes, but that’s the point of internships.

  • Every task you mess up on is a chance to get better.

Note: Ask for feedback regularly. People love helping those who are eager to learn.

4️⃣ Treat It Like a Full-Time Job

  • Show up on time. Take deadlines seriously. Be proactive.

  • You’re not just an intern; you’re a potential hire.

Note: Treat every task, no matter how small, like it’s the most important thing.

5️⃣ Start Early, Get Noticed, and gain experience

  • Early internships can give you an edge over your peers.

Note: Look for roles during your first year. Every little experience adds up.

Internships aren’t just about adding a line to your resume. They’re about:

  • Building your confidence.

  • Learning what you really want to do.

  • Creating a network that supports your growth.

Now it’s your turn!

Your blog came at the perfect time, Rohan. I'm about to start an in-office internship, and your blog has helped clear up many of my doubts. This was really helpful.
