What to do when the strategic goal seems blurry

The triple-threat position – it’s a stance used by basketball players to prepare them for three different options: to either shoot, pass, or dribble the ball. It became second nature to me when I played the game. And my basketball-coaching brother swears it is a fundamental component to offensive success.

In work - and in life - the triple-threat position can become something a lot more than a power move. It can be effectively transformed into a strategic mindset.

A few years ago, I stepped out and began my journey to self-employment. Some might say I had a specific goal in mind. But honestly, all I really had were my values, my experience, a glimmer of hope, and a handful of faithful supporters.

To me, the goal was really blurry. But the desire to take a shot on myself was not, and that became my focus.

I absolutely did not know what the future was going to hold when I started. I had no idea how long I would be sitting on the bench or if I would foul out of the game. Today, I have no clue what 5 years from now looks like for me. (Last year taught us that no one has a crystal ball anyway, though!)

What matters to me now more than ever is remembering my triple-threat position: My options. My mindset. My values.

Those will always help me (and you) decide when to confidently take the game-winning shot.
