Well, that was uncomfortable...
Last month I did something that terrified me...
In the run-up to doing it, I had to keep reminding myself of the mantra that I have embraced a LOT over the past few years:
"The only time you are growing is when you’re uncomfortable."
We have choices in life – you can choose to either be comfy, which usually means staying where you are, where things are cosy – or you can choose to stretch yourself, get uncomfortable – and that my friend is where magic and growth happens.
If you want to make more impact on your cause, I want to encourage you to choose the latter.
So what did I do that was so terrifying??
Public speaking.
In the past, I would have looked a bit like this if you asked me to do a public talk → 😱. This time around I put my hand up and VOLUNTEERED myself!!
The brief: Talk for 5 minutes with 20 slides - set to auto change every 15 seconds in front of 200 people to share a rebellious message in the HR field.
The MC referenced it as being like a Ted talk on speed. It was INTENSE!
Why the heck did I put myself through this??
- Because I wanted to share a VERY important message I am passionate about - reasons why we MUST list the salary on our job ads. A message not many people are talking about, but has potential to make HUGE change.
- Because it felt challenging and super uncomfy - and I know that putting myself in these kinds of situations is where I have seen the biggest growth opportunities in the past few years. And in the case of this talk, a few weeks later, doing this has given me the confidence to do it all again - and think about the next uncomfy or scary thing.
I've been embracing the uncomfy zone a LOT recently...
- Like when I invested in eye-wateringly expensive world-class professional development, and in return had my biggest, most impactful year yet.
- When I put myself out there and launched my first course offering in 2021 and since then have grown my confidence to keep doing bigger and better things, to support you to thrive. With even more coming soon too! Sign up to our mailing list so as not to miss what is coming very soon!
Keeping comfy often doesn't serve YOU
It's your brain's way of keeping you safe, taking the easy path, and staying in the known. And this comfort often keeps you stuck where you are, not making progress and not reaching the goals you might have set for yourself.
In the words of one of my fave authors, Glennon Doyle, and one I find really fitting for the For-Purpose world: “we CAN do hard things!”
What is ONE thing you’ve always wanted to do, but it feels a bit hard or requires you to get into an uncomfy zone?
….and then, as I say with all my coaching clients, WHEN will you commit to doing that thing? Nothing like a bit of accountability!
I'd love to hear your action, so hit comment and let us know what you want to do and by when.
Here in solidarity with you in the uncomfy, growth zone!!
