Don't just read the quotes. Instead, take a moment to consider them and hold them up against your life.

This month’s quote theme is: Time. Contrary to the popular statement, time isn’t money, time is life and it’s a finite resource. Consider this, how we spend our time is how we spend our days, and how we spend our days is how we spend our decades. How we spend our decades ultimately determines whether our life was worth living, or not. Managing and investing our time, wisely, is key to living a life we enjoy. Bring your attention to how you use time by considering the quotes below:

Sit down, take a minute, read, reflect or journal on the prompts presented.

This month’s prompt theme is: Mindset.

Your mindset is a set of beliefs, created from past thought and experience that shapes the way you feel about yourself - and how you interpret the world in which you live. Generally speaking, there are two types of mindsets, growth and fixed. Men with growth mindsets value effort and learning and believe that if they persist, then they can improve. Conversely, fixed mindset men believe their abilities are fixed and often won't try because they think they'll fail or simply aren't good enough to try. Complete the prompts below to consider how your mindset is creating your experience of life:

I. If I listened to my thoughts more, I hear them say…

II. My mindset hinders and helps me in the following ways…

III. To achieve my goals, the thoughts I could focus on more would be…

This month’s BetterMen video is titled: Work First, Family Second.  We say we put family first, but do we really mean it? Many men justify their commitment to work by saying they’re doing it for their family - but sometimes in life, intent and impact don’t align. Whilst many men provide financially, the disproportionate time they spend at work, replying to emails or on their phones means their family’s true needs are neglected. I expand and explain more about this concept in this month’s BetterMen video

This month’s podcast recommendation is: The Purpose Made Podcast. It’s a podcast I recorded recently with Peter Bell. During this episode, we talk about my journey from turbulence to transformation; twenty-first century masculinity, the old outdated blueprint of masculinity, the five key challenges affecting modern-day men and our need to lead ourselves. Peter said, ‘I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dan - please enjoy what I think you will find to be a truly fascinating, potentially life-altering conversation.’

A man who needs no introduction shares his life. An easy, engaging read, DG walks the reader through his life from young musician, hitting the road at 18, to his time in Nirvana and the Foo Fighters, jamming with Iggy Pop, dancing with AC/DC, drumming for Tom Petty and meeting Sir Paul McCartney.

I thoroughly recommend it.

This month’s TED Talk is: The secret to desire in a long-term relationship. Esther Perel is a thought leader. With wit and eloquence, she talks about why we expect our wives/partners to be our best friends and erotic playmates – and how to sustain desire in a relationship.

If your relationship feels like one of practicality: raising children, paying the bills and your sex life stagnant, watch this.

Octobers M&M’s was one of my all time favourites. A large gathering of 32 men, a mixture of the old guard and new faces, combined with crisp autumnal weather and a route conducive to conversation made it one to remember. In a secluded area, it felt like we had the Brecon Beacons to ourselves; river crossings, navigating dense woodblocks and passing by stunning waterfalls all added to the experience.

If you want to walk the route, it can be accessed below:

Important. Our November walk will be the last of 2022. It’s on Sunday 13 November and will be in a new area of the Beacons, North of Abergavenny.

Additionally, on Saturday 17 December, we’ll be having a Men & Mountains Christmas social in Cardiff – stay tuned for the details.

In conjunction with BetterMen client, Matt Bowring of Good Body Stuff, The BetterMen Bulletin brings you a monthly workout. Matt’s a master of his craft; a certified strength conditioning coach and trusted to support A-list actors from productions such as HBO, Sky and Disney Lucasfilms. This month’s workout is titled: The Power of Ten. With a 30-minute clock and no equipment, complete as many rounds as you can of press-ups, squats and sit-ups. It’s a killer, one that makes you work hard but equally, pace your effort. Matt explains the workout and how to complete it in the video.

I trust you’ve found this month’s BetterMen Bulletin useful.

If you have, pass it forward and share it with another man who would benefit from receiving this monthly.

Don’t forget, the next BetterMen Bulletin will be released on the first Tuesday in Dec.

Yours in becoming better,

Dan Stanley

Great themes and sections of the bulletin Dan Stanley. For book recommendations and quotes I gravitate towards texts like How To Think Like A Roman Emperor and How To Live: A Life Of Montaigne. Those books have some great commentary on how to bring compassion, understanding and vulnerability into the role of being a man.
