WEBP in Drupal

WEBP in Drupal

So, I heard you want to improve your site performance, aren't you? Well, aren't we all (looking at you Google).

You have looked at compressing your js, packing css,... ) But it looks like you have reached your peak, you have done everything you could have. Or have you?

What if I told you that you could squeeze up to an extra 20% performance, and what if I told you that it's right before our noses, like cherries waiting to be picked. I'm talking about images, and about WEBP, a format created and open sourced by Google that promises a 20 to 30% boost.

I don't see many people talking about this in the Drupal community, and it may well be because in fact WEBP did not have a clear installation path in our beloved CMS.

That's until now. @Bart Vanhoutte already did an excellent job on its module, it just need a little love to make it fully ready for prime time. And that's what I've been busy with the last weeks (apart of another few other things of course :-) ).

If you are curious about the technology and how it can help you visit my article in Acquia. Don't forget to leave some feedback, and if you find any issues leave a comment in the issue queue in Drupal. I'll love to hear from you on how we can improve Drupal WEBP support.

Is not really linked to Acquia, I maintain that module in my own time, sometimes supported by Acquia, but not always the case. It's a contributed so the whole community decides about that roadmap (whatever the community is or means)

Alexy Jacob This is really interesting!

Is Acquia Cloud supporting the convert feature of ImageMagick, now? It would be great to have the ability to convert to webp within imagestyles.

Great news! We ran out of time at Ixis trying to get it to work back in May. Will be giving the Webp module a second chance soon 👍🏻
