Underestimating The Power of Your Right Brain Costs You Too Much

Can the right brain give you a more accurate picture than the uber-logical analysis of 01010101010101010101010101?

It may be hardly believable in the era of dataism and the obsession with data.

In short:

  • Left-brain = logic, reason, data processing in a sequence A->B->C (like digital computers)

  • Right-brain = holistic, evaluating, intuitive, understanding significance, meaning, inference, relationships, able to connect the dots

Data analysis & creativity: use your brain wisely

Based on dr David Hawkins’s ‘Power vs. Force’, the right brain deals with wholes rather than parts:

Right-brain perception detects essence within a complex field of data that might not otherwise lend itself to meaningful cognitive analysis— such general phenomena as “falling in love” or creativity.

Nature does nothing in vain.

For accurate analysis, we need both our left and right brain.

And yet, the powers of the right brain seem too (woo woo) good to be true.

Sadly, it’s a big waste of our cognitive abilities.

Marketing data example

I’ve spent years in marketing data that has allowed me to understand content performance/significance in a very specific way and focus on low-hanging fruit and what brings the best ROI.

And yet, many (most?) of my top performers were inspired by intuitive reasoning, seeing what was coming, and publishing one of the first articles/content pieces on a trending topic.

I didn’t find that inspiration in Analytics, but thanks to the ability to see the patterns/trends beyond numbers and being ahead of other creators.

Still, Analytics helped me with later optimizations and creating a structured approach (+strategy).

Thoughts?
