#thePOZpulse March 2024
Welcome to the March 2024 Edition!
It's been an interesting start to my year, with January a bit slower than expected, but then things ramped up in February regarding hiring.
We had some past Clients return with open roles some new clients come onboard, and a couple in the web3 space which is a good sign!
However, generally speaking, the job market is super tough. We hear about new rounds of massive layoffs weekly, and not many new open roles (especially in tech)
I know it's tough out there but my advice, treat every day on the job search like a real job. Plan your work and work your plan!
I want to share some actionable job/career search advice in each upcoming newsletter. So in this edition, ill break down how to showcase your ability to FIO: Figure $hit out!
Just figure $HIT out!
Not surprisingly, this is a top (soft) skill set that many hiring managers look for.But there are two problems:
1. Many don't know how to properly ask this question in an interview(so they don't)
2. Many candidates who excel at this don't take the opportunity to showcase it!
→ If you are a candidate who shines at FIO, this is your slam-dunk chance to tell HOW you have done it in your career.
Here is a step-by-step guide
1. Choose the Right Example ↴
→ Select a specific example from your past experiences where you successfully identified & solved a problem. It could be a work-related situation, a project, or even a personal challenge.
2. Structure Your Story ↴
→ Begin with a concise introduction of the situation, providing context for the problem you faced.
Example: "In my previous role at [Company], I encountered a situation where [briefly describe the scenario]."
3. Highlight the Challenge ↴
→ Clearly articulate the problem or challenge you were confronted with. Be specific & provide enough detail for the interviewer to understand the complexity.
Example: "The challenge was [describe the problem], and it was particularly challenging because [mention specific factors that made it difficult]."
4. Describe Your Approach ↴
→ Walk the interviewer through the steps you took to analyze the situation. Emphasize your thought process & methodologies.
Example: "To address this, I first [explain your initial steps], and then I [describe subsequent actions]."
5. Highlight Your Skills ↴
→ Explicitly mention the skills you utilized during the problem-solving process. This could include relevant analytical skills, critical thinking, creativity, collab, or any tech skills.
Example: "I leveraged my analytical skills to [specific actions], and my ability to [mention another relevant skill] played a crucial role in finding a solution."
6. Quantify Impact and Results ↴
→ Quantify the results to showcase the impact of your problem-solving skills.
Example: "As a result of these actions, we were able to [quantify the outcome, such as cost savings, efficiency improvements, etc.], which positively impacted the team and the overall project."
7. Demonstrate Proactivity ↴
→ Highlight instances where you took initiative without waiting for instructions. This could include going above and beyond your role, suggesting improvements, or anticipating potential issues.
Example: "I proactively [describe specific actions] to prevent [potential issues], which helped streamline the process and improve overall efficiency."
8. Reflect on the Experience ↴
→ Conclude by reflecting on what you learned from the experience & how it has shaped your approach to problem-solving.
Example: "This experience taught me the importance of [mention a key takeaway], and I have since applied this insight to approach challenges with a proactive mindset."
