Thankful and Inspired on International Women's Day
In 1984, my mom had the opportunity to travel to China for three weeks. It was not an easy time to get there back then, she had three young kids at home, she was working full-time as a teacher, and it would have been just as easy to not go. However, my mom was determined to take this challenge on – and being the force of nature that she was, coupled with the strong support system she found in my dad, she was able to make the trip happen.
My mom and dad were true partners, equal and collaborative peers who embraced their roles as spouses, parents, breadwinners, and community members. My brother, sister and I grew up watching how they treated each other and learning from the love, care and respect they had for each other.
At Micro Focus, our theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #BalanceforBetter. Building a gender-balanced world is not a nice to have, it is a must have. Diversity makes our team, ideas, and achievements better – in a similar way that balance helps us bring greater creativity, energy and engagement in all parts of our lives. Balance in partnership and in life is a valuable lesson my parents passed on to me and my family.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day today, I am inspired by the people in my life – starting with my parents, both men and women – who help me be not just a better professional but a better person. Thank you to everyone who contributes your very best every day to help all of us reach new heights.
