TEAM Leadership Lessons from the Rugby World Cup™

In the dynamic fields of sports, business and life, victories aren't determined by having the best individual players. The true essence of triumph lies in fostering the spirit of collaboration, innovation and inspiration.
Reflecting on the recent World Rugby Awards, where South Africa's Eben Etzebeth stood as the lone Springbok in the World's Dream Team, many were taken aback. Yet, this seemingly unconventional recognition holds a profound truth - a testament to the power of a united team over individual prowess.
Says Rugby Analyst Mike Greenaway from IOL Sport:
"So, how did the Springboks secure their World Cup victory without necessarily boasting the most exceptional players? The answer lies in their unwavering unity, fueled by spirit, belief, courage, and resilience - a super-glue binding the 23 players together on the field."
Beyond sheer determination, the Springboks showcased exceptional coaching in France. Not long ago, critics dismissed them as the least strategic team in world rugby, laughing at their perceived outdated approach. Fast forward to today, and the Springboks stand as innovators, challenging norms and making bold decisions.
Snatching Victory from the Jaws of Defeat
When Rassie took over the Springboks in 2018, they were suffering from a string of humiliating defeats (including the record 0-57 defeat to New Zealand) and ranked 7th (!) in the world. Rassie's Boks lost half of their matches in that first season, but beat England in a fiercely contested series, and went on to claim a rare victory against the All Blacks on New Zealand soil.
The Boks continued to build in 2019, and made a further statement when they won their first Rugby Championship title in 10 years. They rode that momentum into the World Cup in Japan, and went on to hammer a more fancied England 32-12 in the final.
Fast forward to the 2023 RWC, and Rassie is being acknowledged as one of the greatest innovators in the history of Rugby. Says former England head coach Sir Clive Woodward:
“Erasmus has taken his team from a low ebb to the brink of being double world champions. He’s done it by being his own man and using unorthodox thinking. Orthodox thinking is a curse in professional sport.“
Woodward hailed some of the Springboks’ tactics throughout the Rugby World Cup as they made their way to the final.
“The tournament in France has been littered with examples of Erasmus’ genius. I was genuinely annoyed when I saw South Africa call a scrum from a mark against France because it was genius and something I had never thought about,”
That one action said everything you need to know about Erasmus. Then there was Cheslin Kolbe’s charge down of a Thomas Ramos conversion in the same game. That missed two points for France arguably won South Africa the match.
Erasmus also substituted Manie Libbok after 31 minutes against England. These were all huge calls. But Erasmus has the courage of his convictions. And, of course, he’s led a South Africa team that has revolutionised the use of replacements by bringing on his ‘bomb squad’."

1yMy lesson that i leant is ..We can't trust World Rugby if they apologize to All blacks after the world cup for disallowed tries and errors.. They need to get their house in order...it's too late now.....good luck to the Boks...we'll get you next time!!!
